Has anyone been told to gain 5 lbs. or less for the first 20 weeks of pregnancy? I have PCOS and I am wondering if my doctor wants me to gain so little because of the risk of gestational diabetes. I was instructed to go off of metformin and I go in for a blood glucose test tomorrow. My PCOS is non-traditional. I have a trim figure and a prepregnancy BMI of 20-21. Any thoughts?
Hello
I also have PCOS and non traditional as I was thin before I became pregant. My doctor did not give me any specifics for weight gain however they did say I could stop the metformin. I elected to continue it and I have since had my glucose test. My doctor actually said stopping the met could create justaional diabetes.. I think each doctor has their own way about them. I would call and ask why the max of 5 lbs that seems really low...
best of luck

i too have pcos and was told about the weight gain in the first 20 weeks... as a non-pcos pregnancy does not gain that much more at that point.. i was also told to watch my total weight... with my last pregnancy i only gained 5lbs and the baby was 8lbs 3oz at 36.5 weeks... so i really think that your body's hormones are all out of wack... i'm not really thin, but i'm not heavy either... i was also told, that if you do not watch it, someone with pcos can gain a ton of weight... and have a REALLY large baby and you could develop diabeties..
i was tested at 14 weeks for glucose intollerance and it was a little high... i stopped the metformin in week 10.. so then i had to do the 3 hour glucose tollerance test. the results were ok.. only one result was 2 points higher then where it should be... but i was told that having pcos your body's balance of insuline and hormones have a harder time regulating sugar.. i was told to eat less and try to eliminate the refined sugars... so as for me, i'm now 21+ weeks and have gained really nothing... sometimes it's a 1lb, others it's less 1lb..
I too have PCOS and am overweight to start with. I was told to aim for a total of 15-20 lbs weight gain max. I was on Metformin for 12 weeks. My weight gain has been pretty slow/steady. I'm now 30 weeks and had gained a total of about 14 lbs which is pretty spot on. The babies (twins) are weighing about 7 lbs at the moment so I think I have been doing pretty well regarding not having put on excessive weight.
