2 or 3 embryo's??

Post by nicolamark »

I know this has been debated on here before, but we have just spoken to our Clinic and it's been put to us, that we might have the option when ET comes to transefer 3 embies instead of 2.

However if i came preg with 3 babies, one would be terminated, I can not get my head round this. If i was preg with triplets, i would be estatic, why would i termate something i have longed for???

why???

I am quite sadden by this thought.

Can u guys, help me understand why i would transfer 3 embies, only to then terminate 1 later on???

Hi there!

I am not very experienced with ivf, as i am just starting my first cycle. However, I can relate to you because I may have the same decision to make. I've been thinking about what I would do, if given the option and it really is a difficult decision. That one extra emmbie can make the difference in your end result in such different perspectives. You could face the decision of sacrificing one little emmbie for the sake of two other's, or that one extra emmbie could be the reason that you have a wonderfull bfp. I am mortified to think of the what if's?? But at the same time I am willing to take my chances, b/c the purpose of this long journey is to create another life....and the biggest chance in life, is not taking one at all.

I don't know if i've helped, but just remember what ever decision you make you will have made the best one for you ..you'll be fine!!

Good luck sweetie!!

Hi Nicki i was thinking about you the other day i wondered how you where doing with your cycle...

this is a tough one and this is just my opinion and what we would have done had we been in that situation on my last cycle we transfered 4 embies  at first it seemed like a great idea then the reality settled in, we did have to promise to have a reduction had we concieved more than 2 and we said yeah sure we will...all the time in our hearts (and Sam is in full agreement) no way would we... LOL naughty i know

i know its scary and carrying more than two has it added problems but i now take my strength from the two women i know have had are expecting triplets ...do you remeber Vita...she just had her little ones and they are doing really really well, also a good friend of mines sister in law is expecting triplets in a couple of months (IVF babies too) and she is doing great with the way hospitals are now our babies have a very good chance of being perfectly healthy

i would say go with your heart do what is right for you and your babies

we might God willing have the same decision to make my Dr is thinking we may get 3 blasts (very hopeful and i cant imagine) but if we do he wants us to think about what we want to do well same thing we already know if they wont freeze the spare then we will take them all and i will keep my babies safe

you know we will all support whatever you decide to do...i will even come help you with Nappy duty

love and good luck Aunty

Hi Nicki,
we arent sure about how many yet we wont know untill tomorrow how many if any that we have i think this is the toughest night so far im finding this waiting to know how they are doing harder than the TWW....crazy
but Dr said if it goes the way he thinks it will hes predicted 3 blasts and also said it depends on how they look if they are great he will transfer 2 freeze 1 if they are soso we will transfer them all.....fingers crossed

your so right you do have to think it through just incase, although i know what you mean about its hard to think youd get to the point of having to make that decision....not sure if you remember the friend i talked about she had 6 iui's then switched to IVF she got pregnant on her first go she also transfered 3 embies she ended up with twin girls....so i will have everything crossed for you that this leaves you with two very healthy beanies and no stress of having to make this decision

love Aunty

It's such a personal choice. We really thought about it and agonized over it and then we transferred 3. There's only a 3% chance of triplets and we would just deal with it if that's what we were given. The choice is just so hard but we just continue to hope for the best and hope that our long talks and sleepless nights will lead us to the right place.

Good luck in your decision. I'll be thinking of you!

wow.
when we did ivf our doc talked with us on pros and cons of how many but never once did he say i would need to term 1 of them.

we had 4 embies put in. we had our twins and our son

the risk is higher for more then one baby
and i dont know what i would or could do if i had to chose between one baby or the other to save them...

it would be sad to mc carry all if you could safely have one...
i dont know if there is a right or a wrong on this.

shantala; sorry that you didnt feel comfortable about posting.
what makes this forum so great is having everyones views. no one has to do what some one else says but we all should listen and learn.

hi ogr

bless you - i just didnt want to upset anyone. my post was this:

it really is a tough question but my mum asked me the same thing (she was wondering if the 2 embies they can transfer could split again and i told her in theory the could) so she asked me what i would do if we ended up with 3 or 4....(even though its more than unlikely)...

it really is a tough decision but i think the reason they ask you to terminate one would be to make sure the other 2 and you are ok. with 3 there are greater risks for the other 2 and yourself. of course, like aunty said, there are many out there who have had healthy triplets but on the other hand there are also many risks that we dont hear about as often. personally, i think i would terminate one in order to look after the other 2...having said that, its all easier said than done...and it all depends on how far i would be gone, whether id seen any heartbeats etc....i just think thats what i THINK i would do.....(and its just an opinion and who knows what i would really be like)...

anyway, i know its a tough one...whatever you decide we're right behind you!! (and hope you can start in march....fingers crossed!!!)

i understand that some people really dont agree with me and thats fine and thats why i originally took this post off the forum and pmed it to nicky. but as ogr said this forum is about everyones views so i thought i would post it anyway. thanks ogr!!

Shantala~

Your views are always appreciated here. We all feel blessed to be receiving different perspectives so we can see make the best choices for ourselves.
Our Dr. feels that s/r down to two would be wise if we were pregnant with triplets. Mostly because I am a pretty petite person at 5'2" and not in any way over weight. He has suggested that it would be safer for us all but he also said three would be doable if we were willing to do what it would take.

It's all agonizing when you are faced with the choice and I don't think any of us will know 100% unless we are asked to make that choice. I could say right now that I wouldn't do it but if myDr. said they might all die w/o doing it I'd sign myself up for it right away. We're all just want to be mothers trying to make the very best choices in very difficult situations.

First, I agonize for anyone who has to make such a tough decision.

I'm just beginning this process so please forgive me (if I misspeak), my ignorance level is quite high!

Our medical insurance is not going to cover our IVF thus, we have to finance the entire procedure. We are both, (DH especially) quite distressed by the prospect. However, we want to have a baby together so badly. With this in consideration, we'd like to maximize our chances because we know that we cannot do this countless times. Given the choice between 2 or 3 embryos (and I'm not sure we'd be given the choice .... don't know policy yet), I am pretty sure I'd go for three (all the while never imagining all three implanting).

So, I'm simply curious, I was surprised to read the words here that stated clinics will transer three, as long as the patient agrees to reduce. Can a clinic really make you agree to such a thing? Or, are they just making you aware of the choices and the dangers you face with more babies? I was unnerved when I read they want a patient to agree to reduction should more than two embryos implant.

Wishing all of you ladies the best.

Sincerely,

saralee

i went to a amazing clinic in spokane washington.
they where all great.

in all the time i spent with them they never said i would have to agree with anything.
they did say all the pros and cons of my age, money ,eggs sperm
and the dangers that each embie could split
well when you have 4 put back in and the idea that they could each split was pretty scary.
but if we where that fertile then i wouldnt be in his office..........

hubby and i did talk about all the risk and the what ifs and we did go with 4 everytime.
but some of them wernt very good.

everyone keeps saying 2 or 3 are they still offering 4?

it has been a while sense i have done ivf...

good luck to everyone and may you all have your bundle or bundles of joy in your arms this time next year :D

thanks for you input on this, everyone. This is all just if and when it comes to it, i was very sad to know that this could be an option, as you UK ladies know hfea has set it to be 2 max. however there are cases when they are allowed to transfer 3, basically they where making me aware of what could be, i haven't even had EC yet so heck who knows really, but like i say i was sadden to know that aborting was somethng they would consider....

If and when it comes to it, i have decided 2 will be the number for us!
