I'm new to this board and am interested in doing an IVF cycle with PGD. This is due to the fact that my dh is a chromosome translocation carrier and we lost our ds to due to this genetic condition. We are in Northern California and are looking to cycle pretty soon? Anyone in the same boat?
We did pgd our #1 ivf (done b/c dh is a biogenetics geek and was tre' curious), and will be doing it again coming up. We just had our karyotypes done, so don't have results back yet. Expect they will be normal, but for whatever reason it appears we have yet to produce a chromosomally nl embryo. As a result, we are doing pgd again next cycle. When are you cycling? Best of luck to you!

I had tried to do pgd w/ my second cycle, but on day three, I only had 5 embies they thought would make it to day 5...I guess they wanted at least 6 to do pgd....but they'd never told me that in advance. They decided NOT to do pgd. Anyway, just my story, but something to ask about....
We almost did PGD. DH thought that if it got us to our goal of having a healthy baby with no problems then it was worth it. We were just thinking of it as an extra step towards knowing the baby would be healthy. In the end our Dr. told us he thought a young couple w/ no history and such great results so far would have no problem having a healthy baby. PGD is an amamzing resource and I truly believe in it for those who feel it would help them. We are blessed to have such medicine as IVF and PGD.

Hi guys,
Thanks for the replies! It's so nice we have boards like these to communicate with others who can share similar stories. Sounds like you all are aware of pgd. We actually have done one cycle in '05 that produced 2 healthy embies but they didn't stick! At the time, our little boy (4 years old) was going through chemo for a childhood cancer that is linked to the genetic disorder. After our bfn, his cancer came back full force and within 1 month he passed away. We have had a very long year and miss him greatly. We are hoping to initiate another cycle in the next couple of months and are hoping to have a healthy baby soon.
My dh's brother and wife did ivf/pgd in Aug'06 and are expecting twins in May. Brother in law is a carrier of the translocation also, so they got a heads up from us!
I wish you all success in this process!!
Sassy- Don't give up...every cycle is different...!
Trish~
I am so sorry to hear about your son. It's completely understandable why pgd is so important in your case. You and your dh must have such a supportive relationship to be able to make it through that and still have faith. I'll really be praying for you to have a healthy baby soon. Just can't imagine that kind of loss. Best wishes in your upcoming cycle.

kholtan- Thanks for your reply and thoughtfulnes! It is very difficult to keep the faith...but we are determined to make life the fullest and the best it can be. Hunter (our little trooper) taught us all about life and love and living!! We learned through him how to not let life's circumstances knock you down...just keep perservering and finding strength and joy through it all!
Best wishes to you for a sticky embie!!!
I've contacted a local clinic and am waiting for a call back (it's been a week and I'm kinda irritated). We went to SF for our IVF#1 and don't really want to travel the 2 hours this time. The closer clinic is only 10 minutes away, but I hear they're super busy.
It's so hard cuz I feel completely vulnerable. How do you really know they are cut out to get your bfp for you....and not too busy or lacking the knowledge about your particular problem or diagnoses??? you don't right!! it's frustrating.
Sounds like you are having a hard time picking a clinic. There aren't many clinics around here but I have been to two of them. The first clinic I went to mostly because my uncle had done an internship with him and said he was really great. Just ended up on many rounds of clomid ect. .. but no results.
The second time I really researched clinics within a reasonable drive time and found one here locally where the guy is Oprah's fertility specialist and had an amazing history and reputation. It's funny because I knew I wasn't positive about the first guy and didn't have a lot of confidence in him either but my new Dr. I loved from the moment we met. He was straight forward and positive. He moved quickly and didn't give me any run arounds at all. All ending in my BFP!
After two experiences I would say go to the clinic, no matter how far, that you feel the best about. Follow your gut instinct and in the end I known you will have your baby!
Good luck as you try to sort that out. It's sure not easy. These are the people who are bringing you your dream. We put a lot of faith in them!
I'll be thinking of you!

I can't recall the exact acronym but it basically means they take the fertilized egg and biopsy part of it. Then it grows for three days or so and they do genetic testing on it to determine any problems. It can see a wide variety of issues and tell if it's a boy or girl. For people who have genetic issues that run in their families it's a God send. Your Dr. can give you a packet if info on it if you are interested. It's amazing stuff.

Thanks for the info - you stated it much clearer than the websites did. I think our problems are immunology based rather than genetically based, but I am going to bring it up with my RE and see what he thinks.
Thank you again!

amy: pgd stands for preimplantation genetic diagnosis. Hey, good to see you here!
trishie: wow. you have really been through it. So sorry to hear about your boy... that is tragic. You are clearly a very strong woman. Sounds like pgd is right up your alley.
As for the clinic issue... They haven't returned your phone call in a week??? That is pretty pathetic response time. Wow. i second what kholtan said... just make sure you do your research. For me, it is not only important to know my clinic and RE are good at what they do, but also very important to not feel like i am just $$$ walking through the doors. My clinic satisfies both of those criteria for me. They are responsive and personal. I know you may not REALLY be able to know, but i think you can get a pretty good idea whether or not a clinic/RE has your best interest in mind. Now, having said this... i have never had to travel 2 hrs for ivf and can't imagine what a pain that would be.
As for me... we will be doing 3 fresh cycles in a row, freezing all ferts. Then will do one big "mega thaw" at one time. Hoping to have 30-40 ferts. Expect we will do pgd on them, that way we know... if there are one or two viable ones... cool. If no "nl" ones in that many ferts (in addition to the 21 we already had) ... time to throw in the towel for me.
Good luck!!!

Trish - What clinic are you waiting to hear from? I live in Sacramento so I am just curious. I am at California IVF in Davis and really like Dr. Zeringue, although don't know if he specializes in the pgd procedures. From what I have heard, the Pacific something Clinic in San Francisco is great for that. I was put "on hold" from that clinic in Roseville - the Northern California Fertility Clinic and that is why I went elsewhere.
I also wanted to tell you how sorry I was for your loss. That must have been absolutely heartbreaking. I will be wishing you all the best for your next cycle.
Sassy - Cant wait for the super cycle. It will be AWESOME!
All the best!

Yes...it is NCFMC that I'm waiting to hear back from. I had a consult with them right before my ds got really sick...(thought he was doing well). I just thought I'd re-connect with them and see where to go from here. It's either the Davis clinic or them. They're just only 10 minutes from my house.
I've been reading alot of "not so good" stuff on another board about them and it's really making me nervous.
I did contact the Davis clinic and have been wanting to set up a consult. Yes, they do PGD, which is a must in my case. We actually cycled in Aug '05 with Pacific Fertility Center in SF. They were fine, but just too far. DH doesn't really want to go all that way, if we don't have to.
So, you like Dr. Zeringue? That's good to know. How is everything going so far?? Wishing you well... lol:
