I am using henna for my hair, hope to stop it after 13 weeks. I don't like the mess. I first wash my hair, let it semi-dry and then put henna on, leave it on for 2 hrs. and then wash it off. My hair smells like henna for a day and then it is fine. But this is just too much work...
I keep hearing hair color is safe to use. I am thinking about going back to it after the first trimester.
Hi there, Deepa, I used Henna this weekend also because I just found out I was pregnant, and did not want to use chemical dyes. Yes, it is very time consuming and I felt I had mud in my hair and it didnt provide maximum grey coverage either....so...I dunno...but I guess I will have to endure the mess and inconvenience.
When I went to my doctors last week she told me that normal dyes are perfectly safe. She said to tell your hairdresser you're pregnant and ask her to reduce the amount of peroxide she uses. Apparently by the time the dye goes through your scalp, then into the blood stream, it is diluted time over time. She claims it is no more damaging than using creams on your skin or makeup on your face. A false tanning lotion can do more harm apparently.
I have a few too many grey hairs just near the tip of my crown and I thought there was no way I could go about like that for 3 months.

My nephew's mother is a hairdresser and I've asked my Dr. and the conclusion over here is it's fine to go about regular business. I was advised to try keep the color off my scalp while processing and to make sure the salon had proper air flow. I highlight my hair but I don't think it makes much difference. I've also tried to go an extra week in between appointments. My Dr. said that hair products have come a long way over the years and are much safer now to use.

Just a bit of info on hair dye here. I've also heard that dying your hair is okay, but in moderation. If you can go without it, try to.
There are alternatives to permanent dye (henna was already mentioned).
Temporary dye that can be bought from the drugstores are good too.
I am vegetarian, and I use vegan dye. Theres absolutley no chemicals, they're vegetable based. They are semi permanent and last quite a while. You can find them in most health food stores.
positive_thinking,
How interesting! I am a vegetarian too, (well most of the time)
I will look for the vegan dye. I have not been able to use hair color so far.
Heck, 4 more months and I can go back to hair color.
Is there a particular brnad name I should look for?
Thx,
Aside from Henna, does anyone have any recent info on just plain highlighting hair by foiling, which doesn't touch the scalp (I have to use bleach). I don't go often - maybe once a year - but during this long wait of trying to conceive again I went a little crazy in the fall and had my hair highlighted much heavier than I've ever had. Now the roots are gross. I had a few strands filled in back in December, but I'd love to have a few more strands of blond done but my OB always said no hair color/perms for the first three months and I guess I never asked about bleach because I had no intentions of treating my hair during pregnancy. I don't see my OB until the end of April and I haven't asked my RE.
