Pregnancy Test ??

Post by kim0907 »

I had a transfer on Thursday (2/15), I go in tomorrow for a progestrone test. I have an HCG on Monday. Technically how soon could you take a home pregnancy test and get a postive result if you're pregnant?

TIA for the help.

DON'T TAKE THE TEST - I REPEAT - DON'T DO IT... unless that is that you can handle it coming out negative and still be patient and wait till your HCG test next week. The home tests are the work of the devil. Very tricky little things. You could easily get a negative and still be pregnant at this point.

Amy is correct. Many false negatives with hpt. Also many false positives, because it might pick up the hCG remaining from a trigger shot (most IVF patients are triggered with hCG).

The blood test is much more sensitive, reliable, and informative.

I couldn't agree more. I had 2 negative hpt's and a positive beta (subsequently m/c). The suspense is a killer but why upset yourself uncessarily. Some women do it to 'soften' the blow in case they get a negative on the blood. I have found there's no real way to prepare for that, but that's me. The blood test also measure a much lower hsg level v. hpt's. Your beta needs to be at least 50 for a positive on an hpt and your blood can be as low as 6 for a positive.

Hang in there, and please remind me of what I'm saying when I want to dabble in the evil hpt next week before my beta. :D

Oh, i have been guilty of hpt'ing WAY too early. My first ET, i did it the am of beta to "soften the blow" and i have to say... for me, i was glad that i did (knew i wouldn't deal with the "shock" of the bfn well if received the info from RE while at work). Having said that... it could have been a false negative and i would have worried myself for nothing. As it turned out, though, it was a bfn. This last 2ww, though, i tested starting 3 or 4 days before beta  . VERY BAD idea. Would NEVER do that again as i think it just made the whole thing so much worse. SOOOO, can't tell you to stay away from the evil HPTs as that would be hypocritical... but definitely wait a while.. and only do it if you would be prepared to deal with a neg.
