Hi,
I am 38 and will be 39 when I deliver my first baby. My husband and i went in for genetic screening. We had the NT scan+blood test done in my first trimester. The results were pretty encouraging- 1/2127 for downs and 1/3800 for trisomy13 and 18. I am not sure if I should still have the amnio done. God knows I would do it if there is no risk associated with it. I am not sure if I want to do it because there is a 1/200 risk factor. Currently I am 13+ weeks along. Both my husband and I have no genetic disorders in our families that we know of. I should add that this is an IVF pregnancy. Thanks for any and all help!
Deepa... i too am 13 weeks along with an IVF pregnancy, this was our 4th attempt. Me personally would be happy with the blood results,i wouldnt do anything that would risk my baby, but this is my personal choice. I think you have to go with your gut feeling, but whatever you decide,i hope it brings you peace of mind to enjoy the rest of your pregnancy..
Having an amnio is a very personal decision that DH and you must make together. The question you should ask yourself is what would you do with the information if you had it. If your answer is nothing, why take the 1:200 chance of losing your baby. We opted for the 2nd trimester screening test, which increases the accuracy of your numbers. It is a detailed ultrasound and another blood test. My numbers came back very reassuring. My odds for downs were 1:5700. We did not have the amnio.
Regards,
Tammy

Hi my number were 1:186 chance of one or both twins having downs, they were born at 35wks and are fine. We opted not to have the amnio..we were going to keep them and love them regardless...it's a decision for you and DH

Deepa100 I will be 38 when my baby is born. I had the nuchal blood/scan as well and had similar results as yours. I opted not to have the amnio. I only had the test done based on my age. With the odds given by that test I decided why chance it. I have since had my level 2 US and all is good. You have to do what you feel is right and aminio if done by an experienced doctor is realitively safe.
It is really not something that anyone can advise I feel - it's a very personal decision and you have to do what you feel is best.
Personally, I had no bloods even done on either of my pregnancies as we decided that our wee miracles were\just that and to be honest we couldn't have done anything about it anyway - I also had lots of spotting so that could give false results for bloods.
But, as I say - it's your decision. Lots of people do do the test and all is fine. I hope you find your answer soon.
Take care

Wisconsingal--My doctor said that they could do the test anytime between week 10 and 12. I don't think we're going to have it done---it's hard huh? Who knew there was so much to worry about besides just getting pregnant!
