Cold Sore Treatment - Ghost??

Post by jennifer1112 »

I am 34 weeks... I started to get a cold sore (technically herpes) yesterday morning on outside the corner of my mouth. I decided that it would just eventually go away and I would leave it. However, this morning it was kind of uncomfortable and turned from one small blister to 4 small blisters. I've gotten cold sores in the past - I usually get them about once per year, but never when pregnant.

I called the OBs office and asked if it was OK to use Abreva (Sp?). The nurse called back and said yes. However when I bought it, I looked on the website and the website said that studeis have not been conducted on the use in pregnant and breastfeeding women and to consult a doctor first. I have never taken medicine (other then tums) with this pregnancy and I'm a little skeptical.

The other dilemma is that I've been reading that herpes (albiet genital herpes, which I don't have) can be detrimental if contracted late in pregnancy. I guess I'm just a little scared.

What do you guys think... what would you do??

Hi Jennifer, hope you don't mind me replying...not been pregnant but i do get cold sores mine where so bad i had to get valtrex for them (fab stuff btw...take it at the tingle and it goes away)...anyway my Dr with my last prescription knew we where doing IVF and told me not to treat my cold sores at all while pregnant (being optimistic at the time) so i wouldn't use it ...loads of luck and hope it clears soon

Jennifer - I have suffered with cold sores my whole life, I found a machine which I swear by, it is called virulite see their website http://www.virulite.com/ and works a treat I have had cold sores nearly every month since being pregnant and this little baby clears them up in about 24 - 48 hrs!!! You can also try peppermint oil applied directly to the scabs it is the only known natural oil to kill the herpe virus, I hope this helps.............

Abreva is category b - it's not been officially tested in pregnant women, but tests in animals show no concern. See below:

http://www.safefetus.com/DrugDetail.asp ... adeId=3679

Most doctors will say category a & b drugs are safe to use in pregnancy.

Good luck!

I am 22 weeks pregnant, and have had about 4 coldsores since I became pregnant. I think you are more prone to them when pregnant. I was advised not to use anything. I just use vaseline to prevent big scabs. Sorry, but I think you just have to put up with it... but it'll be worth it in the end!!

Hi I got the biggest most painful cold sore I've ever had on my top lip when I was 5 weeks. It totally mutated the shape of my lip and I kept waking up with the pain! I went to the pharmacist for Zovirax who told me no studies had been done so only anecdotal evidence. The book said not known to be harmful so I took the decision to take it sparingly for a couple of days til it was over the worst part.
