Placenta Previa

Post by suzhan »

I was wondering if any of you experienced this at any point in your pregnancy and, if so, how things went for you? I was just told today I have complete placenta previa and while there's a chance the placenta may move up in the uterus, there's also a good chance it might not. My OB didn't seem too overly concerned and just said if it continues by week 30 or so, we'll schedule an elective c-section for week 38-39.

He also said sometimes they can cause premature labor and/or bleeding. Luckily, I've not had any bleeding yet, but he says if I do, I should go immediately to the hospital.

This last bit got me a bit alarmed, so I started reading a bit about it and of course, the internet has gotten me even more nervous.

So, I was just wondering if anyone here's had the experience and how things went.

Thanks in advance for your time.

Hi Suzhan
My placenta moved up by week 24, my friend had placenta previa, she never had any bleeding. She had a c-section at 37.5 weeks, her son was 7.5 lb.
You are only 17 weeks , so its way too early to know for sure. My doctor said
that 90% of the time low placenta moves up by 28 weeks.
Good luck.

My mother in law had this. It was discovered at 13 weeks when she started bleeding. She was put on STRICT bedrest and told to go to the hospital with ANY bleeding. She ended up going in 8 different times. Hers never corrected itself. It was stressful for the family because she had 3 other kids (all teenagers) but in the end, ALL WAS WELL. She gave birth to a beautiful completely healthy baby girl.

I don't want to worry you more, just wanted you to realize what could be ahead. But, remember in the end that a perfect little babe is just right around the corner for you!

Thanks for your responses.

Were you told of any special restrictions at this point because of the previa?

Suzhan

I had placenta previa and was told that in 90% of cases the placenta will move out of the way well before your due date.
However, I had to be one of the 10% whose placenta stayed put !!
I was told the same as you - any bleeding, straight to hospital - but I had a wonderful pregnancy with no bleeding at all and had a c-section at 39 weeks.
So try not to worry ( I know - easier said than done ) and enjoy your pregnancy I'm sure everything will fine.

Hi Suzhan,
I have the same thing. I was told to avoid intercouse, aerobics and not to lift weights. Apparently 1/167 women get this. In most cases, pregnancy does progress normally. I might need a c-section. I decided to remain calm.

Hi Suz I also was diagnosed as having placenta praevia - but not until I was 32wks!! It was classed as 'major' so at 33 wks I was admitted to lie in the hospital and the plan was to have an elec. c.section at 37wks as they were scared in case I went into premature labour after 37wks. We had a gorgeous baby girl on 21st July last year and she's our miracle baby! They admitted me because I had complications early in the pregnancy, at 12.5 wks I got 4 DVTs, and after being in the hospital for a week at this stage to regulate my blood so it was thinner, I then had to get an injection every day for the rest of the pregnancy so the pp just added fuel to the fire and they wanted to keep a tight eye on me! Thankfully it all paid off and Eimear was born 3wks premature weighing 6lbs8oz! You just have to take it easy and not over exert yourself but there should be a good chance of your placenta moving at this stage when the baby can still move around and maybe move the placenta with it.

Good luck, just mind urself and all will be well. :D

Unfortunately, I had my first bout of bleeding last week and was admitted to the hospital for 4 days. I'm now home on bed rest (up only for potty and shower 1x/day). I have two more months of this and, besides being bored, I'm desparately afraid of another bleeding episode. I hope I make it!

hi Suzhan - I noticed you were in hospital on another thread and was hoping things were OK. Sorry to hear that you are on bed rest - I guess 2 months feels like an eternity at the moment but once you have your sweet baby you will look back and it won't seem so bad. Take care of yourself and surrender to what the doctor says. All the best. Keep in touch with your pals on some of the other threads - are you allowed to sit up with the computer?

Suzhan

Sorry to hear about your scare, you must be very worried at the moment.

Hang in there and do whatever the doctor tells you, two months does seem like a long time but it will all be worth it in the end.

Thinking of you

Love

Thanks so much for all of your support. I've made it to week 30, so 2 down, 7 to go....whew....

If all goes well, they'll do a c-section at 37 weeks.

Thanks again1

Just popped in and read your post and wanted to say well done to you for coming through this far. Anyone would have thought the tribulations would be over once finally getting pregnant, so am sorry to hear that wasn't the case for yourself! Your journey to this point though, will make the birth of your bubba all the more wonderful and sweet, and the lovely miracle of motherhood all the more wonderful. I bet you cant wait to meet the little one  . All the best of luck with the last leg of the pregnancy and best wishes with the birth
