I have PCOS, dx at 26.
For the first time, this month, I am doing a cycle of IVM (In vitro Maturation). This is slightly different from IVF as the eggs will be matured in the lab. They say it is great for PCOS women who are at higher risk of OHSS.
I am now on day 11. Since there was no difference on my US from day 8 to day 10, they have decided to give me some repronex (150 iu x 3 days) to stimulate a bit the ovaries hoping the the follicules will be greater than 6 mm for the retrieval.
This month, there is 50 follicules.
The physicians (2 of them) told me that I do not need general anasthesia for the egg retrieval but the nurses (2 of them) told me that I should have it because the pain will be horrible and will last 1 hour (even if they give Midazolam and Fentanyl).
I thought that the best person to guide me in my decision would be someone who already did it. Anyone feels like sharing their experience at egg retrieval with so many follicules?
I have some symptoms of pcos (I'm 26 too and just found out during ivf cycle)- but not everything but made 38 eggs= 29 embies. you have 50 holy moly! I know I was uncomfortable- you must be!
they put me to sleep for my er and it was the best thing- I don't remember any of it. i got in the OR and the dr said he was going to wash out my vagina and not do anything painful until I was asleep- I don't even remember being washed out!
after they gave me tylenol and codine and to be honest- I needed it! it felt like I had been kicked in the belly and between the legs it felt like someone was pushing up- I had a lot of pressure.
and those other meds sound familiar too- they told me what my drug cocktail was but I don't remember that either.
I had my er done on saturday at 7 am and I was uncomfortable that whole day and then most of sunday too but by mnday I was fine.
don't know if they told you that you wouldn't need seadtion because they are going to mature them in the lab or not. i never heard of that. most of my eggs when they took them were between 1.4 and 1.9.
Hi Coneilia, I was sedated but awake throught he procedure, although i must have drifted off at one point as we were at two eggs and then the next thing i remember was it was nearly over. I was sore the following day but nothing too painful, i had 20 mature eggs retreived. I beleive everyones pain barriers are different i have a high tolerance to pain, but i had very little discomfort.
Good luck with EC and have faith in your doctors they won't let you be uncomfortable.

i dont know how it would feel if you werent sedated but me they put me to sleep and i said thank god and when i woke up i was in pain for the whole day i didnt feel better until the following day in the evening and when doing research on ivf alot of re say it is better to be put to sleep because it is a very uncofortable thing and i believe that i dont think i would want to be awake with someone putting a needle in my private and be awake for it but if you have a high tolerance for pain then u might just be fine but good luck to you
I have PCOS, but I didn't have IVM. My egg retrieval was painful. I was awake during the whole process and they gave me some drug that was supposed to make me feel buzzed? LOL I didn't feel buzzed at all... I felt the whole damn thing. Every poke! I think I surprised them because I remember the girl watching and tracking my vitals kept giving me more pain relief I guess...
Not fun... I would have preferred they put me to sleep! Ah well...
Thank you very much for your replies.
I am still confused but I am worried about being out so I will try it with the cocktail. I went again for us today and I have to take another day of repronex, my endometrium is not thick enough yet : 7.9mm.
I'll see tomorrow and I hope that the retrieval will be on Tuesday!
My first fresh cycle ( I am now transferring a FE from it), produced 16 eggs and 11 embies. I was close to OHSS but it went ahead. The ET was painful as I was so swollen but they kept topping me up with drugs and finally knocked me out! It sounds alot worse than it was. I would take advice of the DR rather than the nurse. They told me it would hurt but never said not to do it, I don't regret it as I got so many eggs.
If this is the best chance for you then perhaps you should do it, they can never perform any procudure without giving you the right pain relief. Alot of women get knocked out from the start. The pain is like being touched when it is very tender, it feels bruised and sore. It is not the worse pain, the dentist is worse!
