How many eggs is good?

Post by Bonnycat »

I recently had my first round of IVF and am currently sitting out the 2WW. They managed to collect 14 eggs from which we got 10 embryos using a combination of IFV and ICSI. 2 were transferred and the rest didn't make it. The embryologist didn't say if these were good statistics or not and I'm thinking if this doesn't work do the numbers seem good enough to try again or is there any pattern to the collection each time. I'm 36 now and my husband is 35 and we simply have unexplained infertility. Any advice please?

I am in my 2ww on my tenth day and going crazy!!

From what I was told they look to get 12-16 eggs, anything more is too much drug stimulation. But that doesn't mean it won't work if more are taken. Recovery after egg retrieval lengthens depending on how many taken. One round I did before they took 26 eggs and 19 fertilized. Sounds great right but let me tell you I was in soooo much pain!! i felt 9 months pg, could not take deep breaths, lying flat on my back was not an option-fetal position for awhile. So imagine my surprise when I had a 3 day transfer to boot!! My body was still in recovery mode and now I was suppose to get pg in 14 days...yeh OKAY! No pg of course but this time around BIG difference...for the better. 16 eggs, 8 fertilized and no pain!! The Dr reduced my stim drugs and I feel great!

Quality was ranged A-C. A being the better (like school) this range was told to me after fertilization on the day of my transfer.

Hi there -

My RE also said they were hoping for around 15 eggs. I had 17 retrieved, 8 of which fertilized. 2 were excellent and I had a day 3 transfer, and of the 6 remaining only 2 were blasts on day 6 and were frozen. I didn't think my odds were good but I got a BFP last Saturday (which was 3 days after my 36th birthday). It's hard to look at the odds, etc. because you always think that more is better, but that's not always true. As everyone always says, it only takes one! I also have unexplained infertility (I have a 5 year old son who was conceived the first time we tried, and we've lost two babies in the meantime).

-Heidi

PS - I also did hyperstim about one week after the transfer, and had the pain, difficulty breathing, nauseau, etc. My RE said that is a great sign of pregnancy if it happens about a week after, as my body was reacting to the pregnancy hormones (he actually congratulated me on being pregnant the day before my blood test, which I was shocked and excited to hear). It's almost all better now. Some women's cycles have to get canceled if they hyperstim before the egg retrieval.

My RE would rather have a few excellent embryos in the end then 30 and have you have OHSS. Trust me I had OHSS after the retrieval and it was the worst pain I have ever felt in my life. Hopefully, I won't have to go through that again. Remember though it only takes one to implant and become your little baby.

So I guess what I'm trying to say is don't stress over the amount of eggs you got. It really doesn't matter as long as you have something to transfer come embryo transfer day, which you did so your in a great position.
