I went to my first OBGYN appointment yesterday and they were unable to hear the heartbeats on the doppler thing. I was just wondering how far along you were when you first heard your baby's heartbeat?
Erin, I am PG with a singleton, so I don't know how much that plays into it but at one appt. they were able to hear the HB at 10 weeks with a doppler and then when I went in at 12 weeks it took 3 trys to get it with the doppler. I think it really depends on where your uterus is, angle and who is doing it. I know when they got it at 10 weeks they told me they don't usually try till 12 weeks, but they didn't have a vaginal ultra sound in the room I was in that is why they gave it a shot. Oh yea and batteries! I went for my 16 week check up and they freaked me out cause the batteries were dying!
I know it is hard not to worry about every little thing, but please try not to worry it is normal not to hear HB on doppler till 12 weeks. But hey you are right there at that magical number 12 weeks! Yah!!!!!!!!!!!
My doctor yesterday said that until the babies are over 16 weeks or so, it can be hard to find the heartbeat with doppler just because they are so little--she said they just cruise around in your uterus and like to play hide and seek.
I'm assuming you saw the heartbeats earlier in the pregnancy? I wouldn't worry about not hearing them---it will happen next time, I bet!
I'm about 10 weeks and just had the doppler done again today - can't find the heartbeat. I have a retroverted uterus (tilted backwards) so the doc said it can be difficult getting the heartbeat before 14 weeks with the doppler in cases like mine.
They did an U/S as well (cause I was having bleeding) and the little heartbeat popped up no problem on the ultrasound through the belly at 178bpm.
Like someone said, sometimes they are hiding on us Try not worry.
Karen
with this pregnancy we heard the HB at 11w 2d, with my last we didn't hear it till 13w 3d, and with my first we were 10w5d... so i think that, like everyone else said... it depends on where the baby is, the 13w3d, they did an US and said that the baby was hiding behind my pubic bone, so try not to worry, and you'll hear it next time!!!
Wow, those doppler things can be tricky! So apparently there's no need to worry even if there's troble finding a HB with one...
I have never gone through that - we have only had vaginal u/s's done so with the new machines they obviously allow you to both hear and see the HB very early. I heard my baby's HB at 5 weeks 6 days.

Thanks for all of your responses. I feel much better now. I am going for another ultrasound next week so I will be able to see the heartbeats again I just wanted to hear them. Thanks again for your answers and I wish you all the best with your pregnancies!
