triplets

Post by boomer »

Are there any moms to be on this site that are expecting triplets? DH and I were told we were expecting twins last week, but when we went for our 2nd u/s on thursday we were told it's triplets! DH and I feel a little overwhelmed - If anyone else is pregnant with triplets, I would love to hear how your pregnancy is going and how you are preparing. Or even if you're not pregnant with triplets, any encouragement would be wonderful right now until i start breathing again. Good news is that all three babies have good heartbeats and are good sizes.

WOW! Triplets!!!! Congratulations!!!!
:D :D :D
Although we are not expecting three, we are pg with twins. Also, I have a friend who had triplets from IVF almost 2 years ago and they are awesome children! I actually know 3 families here locally with triplets and all have said the same thing to me. Schedule, schedule, schedule!!!!!!! Knowing that will make your life a bit easier.

I can't imagine three but I am sure you will be just fine. Just don't be afraid to let family help you and ease some of your workload. The reality probably won't even set in for a while. We still have to say the word twins a lot to make sure it's still real. :D I'm super excited for you and feel free to join us on the Double Trouble thread since I don't know of anyone else expecting triplets right now!

Enjoy your pregancy! You are so lucky to have been chosen by three babies to be their mom! If you need anything at all please do not hesitate to ask! CONGRATS!!!!

Kimberly,
Thank you for writing back and for being so encouraging and supportive - we also have heard that it's all about getting a schedule down and we defenitely plan on enlisting our families for help 7 days a week ! I just hope that all 3 babies are born healthy and weigh as much as possible. I use to work in a NICU for years and I'm very painfully aware of the possibilities of premature labor, low birth weight, and even surgeries that some babies have to go through. When the u/s was done, the doctor handed us information right away about selective reduction and asked us if we had talked about the possibility of triplets and what we would do. We both looked at her in disbelief and told her that we were thinking we may never get one baby - we never thought to consider triplets. It was so strange to go from trying so hard to get pg to having the doctor hand me info on selective reduction. DH and I are not going to reduce, but I hope that i'm making the right decision because they say that each baby is at a higher risk for medical problems as a triplet. They also said that triplet pregnancies reduce themselves to twins 25% of the time by end of the first trimester. So we are trying not to get too excited just yet. Actually, right now we are just still in such shock but i'm sure excitement will follow. I have another u/s scheduled this week so hopefully all 3 babies are still doing well.

Boomer~ You sound very positive! :D That is great! You obviously know the risks involved but knowing the risks also makes you better prepared to try and avoid them. Don't think of all the risks as horrors waiting to come but instead combat against them with your knowledge. What a great thing be so knowledgable!

My last friend that had triplets did great. She did end up on bed rest for a month or so but the babies only spent about two weeks in the nicu and only because they were small and needed to gain weight. They are a normal roudy three some now and all are doing great. Actually, everyone I know with triplets has a happy ending. Two were surrogate situations and everyone one of the babies has been healthy since birth. Perhaps small and underweight but none had any other problems.

We saw a set of triplets about 4 years old playing at the beach last year and they were ADORABLE!!!!!!! two little boys an done girl. They all looked so much alike but the boys were like best buddies playing hard and the little girl just took advantage of the alone time on her mommies lap. So sweet!

Good luck and keep us all posted on your progress. We are thrilled to have a set of three on here!

Boomer,

I am a high-risk OB nurse and have cared for several women with triplet pregnancies, even one with quads. They all had great outcomes! They were on bedrest at the end of their pregnancies, but that combined with frequent monitoring helped them have healthy babies.

I know how shocked I was to find out I have twins. I can only imagine how you felt when you heard triplets!

Congratulations!

Kimberly and Laura,
It's so nice to hear that other people you've known with triplets had such great outcomes !! I expected to be on bed rest - I'm a hopsital social worker and for years i worked on the antepartum unit, counseling women who were on bedrest for months. Laura - do you know typically at how many weeks women with triplets are advised to stop working? I read that that delivery tends to be 32-34 weeks for triplets. I'll keep you both posted on how my u/s goes this week. Right now i'm busy trying to find a perionatologist, as my OB has recomended this type of doctor for my prenatal care. My OB was willing to follow me with twins but not triplets.

I am not really sure when you will have to stop working. We typically don't see women on our antepartum unit until they are 23-24 weeks, so I'm not sure if they stopped working before that. I doubt they will let you work past 24 weeks. Personally, I had to stop at 25 weeks due to preterm contractions. As a nurse, I was working 12 hour shifts and my uterus didn't like that!

You definitely want to find a good perinatologist. Make sure he has privledges at the hospital with the best NICU in your area. It's pretty much a given that triplets will spend time in the NICU. The last triplet mom I took care of made it to 32 weeks and her babies were almost 4 lbs each! They did so well! Better than a lot of singleton babies I see.

The best thing about seeing a perinatologist is that you get lots of sonograms! I have had a level 2 sono every 3 weeks since I was 8 weeks. Lots of people with single babies only get 2 sonos their whole pregnancy.

Good luck with your sono this week and you should join us on the double trouble thread.
