New here, first IVF

Post by hopeful_dad »

Just need to write about this…

My wife is 43 and I am 42. Due to mostly blocked tubes, we have had to try invitro. Neither of us have children, so we are very anxious about this; especially since we had a miscarriage early ’06 and no pregnancies since.

8 follicles were harvested, and all 8 eggs retrieved. 6 were fertilized on day 1 (not ICSI). On day 2, 3 were abnormal, 3 normal.

Today the 3 normal ones were still viable. All 3 were put back. The grades were 4, 4, 4A. Grade 4 is as high as this clinic normally assigns. The 4A had 4 cells, not all symmetric, and the 2 4’s were 8 cells each.

All in all, I think this is about as good as could have hoped… 2 excellent embryos and 1 “good” one.

Now we wait two weeks :)

Wish us luck.

Hi Hopeful Dad

It sounds like it has gone as well as possibly could have gone! I am currently on my 2 week wait after an FET and I have to say it is the hardest part for us! There is an April group on the General forum - you are more than welcome to come and join us! Wishing you all the best!

hopeful_dad, I just wanted to say good luck! Your wife and mines numbers sound very close. We only put 2 8 cells back in and we are expecting a little girl the begining of June. I will be 38 and my husband is 43.

Let us know how it goes and try and relax :-)

Thanks Charlie and Cowgirl! Way to go!!

The wait is already agonizing... bad enough waiting for something good, nevermind waiting if you don't know it's good!!

Best of luck to you both. I will keep checking in :)

Bill

All the best to you and your wife. People forget about the dads in fertility issues and pregnancy.

It's wonderful that you joined and finding out as much as you can from the site, and us women must be great for you both. It's something that you can take part in, and your wife can concentrate of other things if needed, and just get bombarded by her hubby with all these cool facts he's learnt for the day. LOL good on you.

I've done temperature charting and body awareness, and my hubby knows the whole programme and the patterns of my body inside out as I do, and it makes me so proud when he's quizing our RE from time to time.
He really gets a shock when he knows hubby's just as clued up and we ask questions paitents don't normally ask.

So all the best and keep us posted as your little ones sound like they're soing great :D .

Hopeful Dad,

Good for you for being so involved! I know just what you are going through. My DH and I are the same ages as you are and this will be our 2nd IVF. We did three rounds of clomid and two injection + IUI cycles before moving to IVF. Our first cycle didn't work because they could only transfer one 7 celled grade A embie because the lab accidentally threw away the other three viable embryos. You can imagine how we felt. Anyway we are scheduled to begin round two next week. It is hard being older and seeing the odds but you just have to believe that you can beat them! It sounds like you have the most optimal conditions going for you. Keep us posted!

Thank you again for all the support and best wishes.

The two-week wait finally ended yesterday!!

I'm afraid there wasn't good news, bfn.

We were so hopeful about this. My wife had some spotting for a few days and some cramps but then they went away! It was looking really good. She is now 3 or 4 days late for her period no more spotting or cramps... but apparently, no baby either. I guess the progesterone is holding things up.

We talked last night. I am not so sure we will try again, or maybe only try once more. 10-12K is tough to put on the line when apparently the odds are not good, and even when things went very well (as they did for us) ... it still didn't happen. At the end of all of this may well be a 30k+ adoption process also! We will have to go overseas as there is very little likelihood of getting a healthy child in Canada at our age.

She feels the same way I do, which is good. I am finding that I am more upset about her being upset than I am about my own sadness. The hormones certainly don't help with that!

This process is not easy and I wish there was some way I could make her NOT feel like her time has come and gone for having a child.

Unfortunately, it was a very rude awakening for us yesterday. I think perhaps we were a little naive about this going in, but it is so difficult to stay positive and be prepared for bad news at the same time.

Thank you again everybody.

:hugs: I am so very sorry that the IVF didn't work for you and your wife.
It does feel like gambling with a lot of $. I am afraid as my husband and I will be doing our 1st IVF in May, and we only have one shot at it. We had to get a loan, and I know I will be a mess if it does not work. I am being hopeful though.
I wanted to ask you if you and your wife have thought about embryo adoption? I think it is wonderful that you are talking about adoption, so please do not get me wrong. I am praying that my IVF works not only so I can have a baby, but so I can donate some of my embies to other couples, too. Dh and I are freezing some of our embies if we have some to freeze. If we get our bfp, then they are all going to couples who need them.
I wish you all the best, and I hope you and your wife can become parents very soon. Sometimes our sweet little children have other ways of coming into our lives.
Hugs,
Jenny
