Post by kia1973 »

Anyone know if its safe to fly in the early stages of pregnancy??? i have googled it and some site's say not to fly in the first 12 weeks where other's say there is no known problem!!!!

has anyone got any advice on this, i booked a flight months ago for a family members wedding it's not a long flight just an hour or so, but really don't know what to do!!!! i will be 10 weeks by the time i'm due to fly.

do i fly or Not?? i just dont want to do anything that will put my little one at risk.

thanks

I am not sure, check with your doctor. I am flying home in June and will be 12.5 weeks then and they said that was fine and that is a 5 hour flight.

As far as I was told, they just don't want you flying later in the pregnancy so you don't go into labor on the plane.

There is really no cause for concern with flying in the first or second trimesters of a healthy pregnancy. Most OB/GYNs would "ground" you at 36 weeks (with a singleton, sooner with twins). I have already flown many hours and am flying many more this month alone, including internationally next week. I am seven weeks, and my RE had no problem with it. The evidence that flying induces labor is tenuous at best. Some think that the cabin pressure could possibly change the pressure and impact the amniotic fluid in the uterus. There is no strong evidence to support the theory, but it is not the theory alone that merits the 36-week precaution... like JesJes said, it would just not be fun to go in to labor on a plane. It never hurts to reassure yourself by discussing it with your RE or OB. If there are any special circumstances for your pregnancy, it's possible they may want you to take added precaution. For me, tray table and seat backs are in their full upright and locked position. (wink)

I flew at 6weeks to Dubai (5 hour flight) and when I was about 25 weeks (to US - about 10 hour flight)...but everyone is different so I would check with your doctor first and get his/her approval.

I flew to India at 5 weeks and back home at 9 weeks, about 12 hour flight (To and from Australia DP works there) with both my IVF dr and ob's blessing.

They did have me wear compression stockings and take low dose aspirin as at higher risk for DVT on long haul flights.

Also, even though I didn't look pregnant I asked for bulkhead seat due to pregnancy and was given it which made flight much more comfortable!!
