Metformin

Post by Cori »

I just went in for my baseline ultrasound today (day3). I have been on Lupron and they told me to start taking Metformin. I have to wait to begin my stims because my insurance is requiring a hysterosalpingogram before I get approved for IVF. Can anyone tell me a little about Metformon? Are there any side effect? Does it work. I am assuming that they put me on it bcause they say that I have polycycstic looking ovaries (not the syndrome).

Hi Cori,

I am on 2250 mg of Metformin. They upped my dose since my first IVF failed. Usually people start off on about 1000-1500 mg a day. Met takes a couple of weeks to be beneficial to your system. I switched to the time release about 2 months ago and I would strongly recommend them as I have less side effects. Many people have stomach problems on Met but your body gets adjusted after a while. I would break out in a sweat after I took the Met but now that I am on time release I don't have that problem. Also many people lose weight on Met....no such luck here : ( I definitely was ovulating on the Met but since we also have male factor it didn't really matter.

PS the hysterosalpingogram is easy. I had been a bit nervous about it but it wasn't painful at all....I could have easily gone to work the rest of the day.

Good Luck!
Michelle

Hi,

I started out on 500mg of metformin. It made me so sick!!!!!!!!! My stomache made this awful churning rumbling noises. I had severe diareaha(however you spell it) I couldn't eat normal foods without getting stomache pains, so I ate toast, soup, and crackers for a bit. It lasted for at least a week. Then each time I would up the dosage (every two weeks) I would get sick all over again.

I don't write this to scare you because I have known some people who don't react this way at all. I just want you to be prepared just in case it happens to you. I took my pills like 10 hours apart and eventually I was fine. It helped me lose a lot of weight and I really feel it helped my fertility as I am now 14 weeks pregnant. Good luck on it, I just toughed it out, but you don't have to if you have problems, they have other options. Good luck!!

Thank you so much for your replies. I just took my first pill a couple of hours ago so, we'll see. I just hope that it works.
Thanks again to you both.
Congratulations on your pregnancy Shanny and good luck to you Michellyn.

I have been on Metformin for 2 IVF cycles with pregnancy with both of these cycles. My first IVF cycle I had OHSS, many low quality eggs and a chemical pregnancy. I do not have PCOS but they put me on the metformin for the next 2 cycles and it worked great!! Expect some GI side effects at first but they go away as you adjust to it. Extended release formulation definitely helps with that. I also think that taking it really helped me to not gain a lot of weight with the stims and subsequent weeks of estrace and progesterone. Good luck!

i have taken 500mg TID for the last 2 years. No side effects whatsoever. It is actually used to treat type 2 diabetes mainly, but when used in conjunction with infertility treatments ups success rates.

ps- my personal experience w/ the hysterosalpingogram sucked. it hurt me so bad i couldn't believe it. looking back, if i could turn back time i would have never a zanex and a bunch of painkillers prior.

better luck to you!

Best Way to Take Metformim

Post by Lavender »

Hi all,

This will be very helpful for all those who take Metformin or Glucophage XR. One thing for sure is that this pill definitely causes lot of bloating/GI related problems. The best way to deal with this is by taking the medications correctly. "Take the medication along with the food." I take 2-3 spoons of food and then the medcine and finish up the remaining food. I have minimal bloating problem and I am really able to tolerate the medication. I got this tip from my GI specialist and hope this works for you too. Never take this medication after food, that will cause very severe bloating, etc. Also, never combine prenatal vitamins with Metformin, becos the prenatal vitamins have lots of iron and that interact with the Metformin. You will have the take prenatall with a little snack during the night to minimize side effects. Advil/Motrin etc would also cause similar issues if we take it with Metformin. Hope this helps. Goodluck to you all.
