3 day transfer of embryo

Post by Rady »

I have a question on 3 day transfer. what is the ideal number of cells in embryo during the 3 day transfer..and will the success rate increase with 5 day transfer? the reason iam asking this is previously my RE was talking about 5 day transfer but after ER, they are planning to do a 3 day transfer..as on the 2nd day there are 7 2 celled embryos and 5 4 celled embryos..is this normal? iam totally confused as why cant they wait for 5 day.

Rady - I had the same question as my RE was considering a 2 day transfer for me. I asked the nurse today and she said it depended on the number of eggs that fertilize and the age of the mother. If there are a lot of eggs and the fertilize well they will try to go to 5 day blast stage but the majority of transfers are 3 day. If there are few embryos, they will sometimes do a 2 day transfer. Basically we are the best place for them to develop so don't worry. Usually on day 2 the embryos are 2-4 celled so yours sound right on track. On day three they like them to be 7-8 celled. You are doing great. Try not to worry.

Rady - I had a 3 day transfer both times I did IVF. The first time they transferred 1 - 6 cell and 1 - 7 cell embies and 1 resulted in our beautiful daughter. This time they transferred 2 - 8 celled on Day 3 and I am pregnant again. The optimal cell count on Day 3 is 8 cells but they will work with lower ones if they look good. I didn't have any that made it to Day 5 on either attempt so I was lucky Day 3 worked both times. They try to get them to Day 5 to the Blastocyst stage since they have a better chance of success. But I know Day 3's work as well. Good luck to you!

Love,
Christine

Hi Rady,

For a 3 day transfer they prefer that the embryo's are at least a 4 cell divide if not more. So ur right on track :) The more they divide the better.
When i had my transfer, i had a 2 day, my embryo's were only divided to a 2cell by then, we were told that of course they could be slow starters, and will go on to grow further in the right surrundings - the womb, but that they would prefer them to be 4 cell by now. We were obviously disapointed but still didnt give up hope.

Sadly that wasnt the case for us, we went on to have a BFN last Sept.

Next mth we start the roller coaster again and should we have just a 2cell embryo i WONT be disapointed this time.

A lady who i cycled with the first time around with, had a BFN on a 6cell divide embryo, she went on to do another cycle as soon as she could. This time around she got just 3 eggs - 2 fertalized, and the 2 were put back at just a 2 cell divide. She was extremley upset, thinking that if a 6cell didnt work, no way would a measley 2cell!! She thought that it wouldnt work, and so carried on with her 2ww as normal.

Lo and behold - she is now 14 weeks pregnant with 1 baby - so u see, having a 2cell on a day 2 is NOTHING to worry about, cos it can happen, and it DOES happen. Emma (my friend) is living proof, and i am sure that there are loads of women on here that it has happened for too.

Dont be disapointed with your 2cell embryos hun, they are just as important as ur 4 cell and may go on to be a fully fledged hip hopping screaming beautiful baby :D

I wish u well, please let us know ur results. Good Luck,

Becky Xxxx
