1st IVF failed-what happened? please help

Post by Faina205 »

Hi, ladies
I am new here.
I have finished my first IVF cycle on on April 25th and it was a BFN. :(
I am trying to figure out what could have gone wrong
Here's the info on my cycle:
24 eggs were retrieved
sperm did not penetrate any on the first day
Rescue ICSI - insterted 17 eggs on the 2nd day-9 fertilized
Embryologist said the eggs appeared to have a hard shell, they did assisted hatching on the transferred embryos
Transferred 2 8cell embryos 3 days later, the rest were under 6 cell stage
None were left to freeze
Took progesterone capsules for the 2 week wait
The utering lining was 12 the day before the Transfer.
3 days before the pregnancy test, I started spotting, which develped into AF by the pregnancy test day

Please give me your thoughts on what could have happened, what went wrong and what to do next time

I was on Lupron for 2 weeks and 1.5 vial of Bravelle for 10 days for my Protocol

thank you all

Dont give up. Sometimes the chromosomes in the egg are not viable. Your system detects that it is not normal (may have birth defects) and does not allow it to implant. It is good that your body can do that. However, I know how hard it can be to accept. Good Luck and lots of baby dust coming your way.

We did IVF cycle in Aug/Sep 03... same thing happened to us with no fertilization after 1st 24 hours. Did rescue ICSI and transferred 4 "struggling" embryos. Fortunately it did work and my healthy little girl will be 3 on the 19th of this month. What they did discover that I have a rare condition of the outer shell of the egg is "rock hard". It is called a brush type or lamp brush like zona.

We had nothing left to freeze. We know now to do ICSI right off the bat and we have also done the assisted hatching. We did another IVF cycle in 2005 and 3 frozen embryo transfers after that. The embryo quality is really good and the ICSI has removed all the barriers, unfortunately no pregnancies from any of those cycles. We just completed our 3rd IVF cycle ... because the quality of our embryos are so good and I am only 33 they allowed 4 embryos to go to the blastocyst stage. Transferred one, successful but miscarried after week 5.

We live in Canada and we may have a little bit different guidelines but it does work and at least they know what the problem is and they can "get around it"

It's not an easy road, do the best you can and keep your head up.

Hello Everyone
I am also new here. I have been reading the forum for a while but never had the courage to write anything. I dont like whining but that is the mood I am in after my first unsuccessful IVF.
It is unexplained infertility so neither the doctors nor my husband and I know what is going on.
We have been trying for 3 years now and are both so exhausted that it is hard to describe. And after the first IVF I am terribly scared and have hardly any hope left.
How do you girls manage to be so strong and keep fighting?

I'm also new here, came from another board, so I apologize if I'm not completely familiar with the lingo yet! My husband and I have been TTC for 2 yrs, also without explained infertility. My first IVF cycle failed in December, right before Christmas. I"m so frustratted. We plan to do another IVF cycle in July, starting injections in June. I keep putting it off. Part of me hopes every month that I will just get pregnant on my own and the other part is so afraid of disappointment. How do you stay positive when you don't know what's wrong? And is it just me, or is everyone around us getting pregnant?! We hope and pray that IVF will work the second time around. I've tried to reduce my stress as much as possible and I'm trying to stay positive, although with each passing day it gets more difficult.

Hi Ladies,

Faina, my 1st IVF exactly like you. DR said my eggs had a hard shell. On the day of transfer, DR an Embryologyst told me that i had lower chance to be pregnant because what happened. Dr said next cycle they will do ICSI directly on the day of egg retrieval. May be you can discuss about this with your DR for your next cycle. Good Luck to you.
