Morning Sickness?

Post by Sarah R »

Oh, Sandra, I sympathise, it was a horrible horrible time.

There's some huge posts about ms on the old board - probably towards the end of April - I had a really really bad time of it, and remember being v jealous of Sally, who just sailed through with hardly any queasyness. I think there were some posts when Miriam was going through it, probably about 10 weeks back now.

Mine started w7 and lasted until w14ish. Best advice I can give is try everything you're told about, as something may work. I lost 8 kilos in my first 3 months, however, this didn't worry the medics, but they tracked me v carefully. Because I'd had a big ms problem with the first pg, I was prescribed some drugs for if it got really bad, but only had to resort to taking them 3 times. The big priority is to keep yourself hydrated, the baby will take everything it needs from you, it's only you that suffers.

Some things that may help:

- take medication if it is prescribed. The main thing they give, cyclecene (or similar spelling), is not known to have any effects on the foetus, but I only took them when absolutely desparate.
- eat small & often.
- baby food (easy to digest and no additives)- I used to be able to graze on farleys rusks
- full sugar drinks (because diet ones have artificial sweeteners)
- ginger (biscuits, cake, beer etc)
- any other wierd combination of food that you fancy (I was into banana and custard at one point)
- keep off caffine
- some people swear by the travel sickness bands
- PC's and TV's may also set you off
- sleep immediately after eating, you may digest some of it as you snooze.
- avoid foody/smelly environments.
- I couldn't go to my parents for weeks, the smell of dogs and ciggys was awful (still insist that they open all the windows!)
- don't touch your tounge and roof of the mouth when teeth cleaning, it can trigger gagging.
- you get free dentist treatment, make the most of it!
- Bob used to have to shower and change before coming anywhere near me when he'd been out for the lads - just sniffing beer & curry on him one night made me heave there and then

Most of all, it will end sometime soon, and you'll wake up one morning really fancing some brekky - believe me it will happen.

Talk to your midwife, she will have loads of ideas.

Thinking of you,

S

Also, get yourself signed off of work if you're really feeling bad, travelling can be awful, and it's not nice for your colleagues to have you hoofing in the ladies all the time (I nearly heaved onto a client's shoes once).

GP should have no probs signing you off. If necessary, get the violins out and play the 'I went through all that fert treatment, can't cope with the sickness...' card.

S

Hi Sandra,

Sorry for butting in from the other side. My sis-in-law is a midwife, and suggests eating plain (sweet) biscuits at least 45 mins before getting up in the morning, so you have something in your stomach right from word go.

Hope you're feeling better as we speak.

Fiona xx

Hi Sandra

I've heard people say that ginger works wonders. A friend of mine was also given acupunture and it helped as she was really sick for her first three months and they thought she was having twins.

If all else fails carry a bucket everywhere. Okay I'm going now before you kill me.

Lisa(Loonpants)
xx
