How reliable do you think ultrasounds are?

Post by shanny »

Hi girls,

I just got back from a ultrasound just for the gender of my baby. My dr doesn't do them til 20 weeks and I wanted it done before our adopted son comes in June so we get things ready. The girl looked for a long time and said the baby was not opening her legs and the umbilical cord was right between her legs. She said the whole time she looked she didn't see one thing that looked like a boy part. So we are excited that it is probably a girl, but I've heard stories where people have been wrong. I'm gonna get stuff ready for a girl, but keep tags on everything. I guess my question is those of you that have had girls or have had ultrasounds saying it was a girl, how obvious was it? Did you ever doubt? Anyway, I want to get excited, but don't want to go over board. By the way I love u/s, it was so fun to lay there and watch her move!!!

Hi Shanny,

You didn't say how far along you were but I'm guessing you are less than 20 weeks. At my work, the sonographers say that you can tell a boy with reasonable certainty from 12 weeks, provided the sonographer is good at their job. Its harder to tell girls definately as they don't have any real obvious "appendages". Most sonographers will avoid trying to determine the sex until 20 weeks or so as unfortunately people sue when they get told the wrong thing.

Your sonographer sounded like she struggled with the babies position what with the cord and her legs being closed, so I would keep an open mind about the sex just to be on the safe side. Keeping tags on clothes you buy is a good idea!

Best of luck, you'll love your little angel when they arrive no matter what they are!

Hey SHanny! CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!

Due to some scary stuff this morning that all turned out well, we found out today that we are having a boy and a girl!! WHOOOHOOO!!!!! They were both very clear and easy to read. Once I saw the girl there was no doubt that the other one was a boy. You can see the outline of everything on him perfectly and the little girl was a great angle and clearly she had three lines withing her body and nothing anywhere else.

We feel so grateful and I'm sure you do too to know you'll have one of each. Isn't it amazing to think of your new baby boy getting to share his life with a sweet little girl and her looking up to her brother?? I just think it is so dear!!!!

Congrats again and I'm very happy for you!
Take care~

HI girls,

Thanks for your replys. They told me pretty much what I already knew, it could be a girl, but maybe not! Kholtan, I hope everything is okay with you and your sweet babies. I am so happy for you that you are having one of each! We also saw some lines that seemed to be girl lines so we are hoping at 20 weeks it will be confirmed. Anyway, thanks again and good luck!

Congratulations, Kimberly! I am so excited for you - a boy and a girl. I would love that, too!

Shanny - Our u/s tech said that even if she had an inclination at the nuchal test u/s, which is between 11-13.6 weeks, she wouldn't say it because they are just so little. I know two people who were told at that u/s and they were right, but I've also heard of some who were wrong that early. My Ob has us do the anatomy u/s at about 18 weeks. I found out with my son, who is 5, at our 18 week and it was evident that he was a boy. I also had one at 17 weeks with a daughter that I lost. The tech said she was 95% that it was a girl, which an amnio later confirmed. You should definitely be able to see at your 20 week u/s as long as the baby is cooperating! Good luck!
