Nuchal scan fine- amnio??

Post by Katy91 »

Hi everyone - I just had my nuchal scan this week, with blood tests, and they basically said I have the risk factor of a 20-year-old (I'm 39).

They said they'll do another blood test in three weeks that will be more revealing, but I know that, given my age, they want me to consider amnio. I just don't feel like I want to, and I feel like everything is basically ok. I have felt like that from the beginning.

Am I being stupid???

I was in exactly the same situation 3 months ago. After thinking about it for long, I decided to skip the amnio. I did not see enough reason to invade my baby's space with a needle. So, I cancelled the appointment. It took me a long time to get pregnant and it just felt dumb to do amnio since the risk from amnio is a lot higher than the probablility of having a baby with defects. I have decided that this is my baby, I chose to give birth at 39 and it is my responsibility to not to expose him/her to any known risks. I only did NT scan because it is non-invasive. Also did level 2 scan, AFP test in second trimester only because they are all non-invasive.

Good luck to you, whatever you decide to do.

Hi katy,

Ultimately its your choice but if you got a great result on you nuchal, its very unlikely that you will have a bad one on the amnio. So you have to ask yourself - is it worth risking a miscarriage? I personally would say no. Would you terminate if there is a problem? The nuchals are pretty relaible.

Best of luck with whatever you decide.

Thanks so much for your replies. That's pretty much the way I feel, but it helps to get other perspectives. Healthcare providers don't want to really tell you what to do, for obvious reasons. But I'm guessing if I had not had good nuchal results, they would be pressing an amnio more intently.
