To scan or not to scan ???

Post by tshepher »

Not sure if it's a good decision or not but DH and I have decided not to have a 6 week scan. My consultant wanted me to go in this Friday when I would be just over 5 weeks but we have said no and have decided to delay it until I'm around 9 or 10 weeks, or even wait until the 12 week one.

I want to do things totally differently this time around and because I have had two mc's previously i'm not sure what value the 6 week scan has. Both times before it showed a perfectly heathly embryo (the 2nd time we even saw a heartbeat) only to be devastated later. The pain seemed worse somehow because we had actually seen our babies on screen.

Sorry if this is a delicate subject and I don't mean to be so morbid but needed to know if anyone desperately disagrees or can offer advice as to why I should have one.

Terri
xxxx
To scan or not to scan ???

Hi Terri

Can totally understand why your dubious about the scan. I didn't have a six weeks scan, had mine at nearly nine weeks and to be honest there still wasn't really that much to see except the heartbeat. I think that's all they were checking for as they didn't take any measurements or anything like that. Have another booked now for 12 weeks. If anything, I just felt as though it put our minds a rest that all was progressing well. Up until the scan, I kept thinking, what if I have the scan and there's nothing there or there's no heartbeat and this would have worried me sick until the 12 weeks scan. I personally think the scan is just for re-assurance, but if it's not worrying you, I don't see any reason why do should. I had my official 16 weeks scan date through from the hospital (thought I get free 12 week one but obviously not!) and it clearly says on their that the scan is not compulsory and is down to personal choice. My first scan was included in the price of the FET package, so I wasn't gonna knock it. I would do whatever you feel comfortable with.

Good luck mate.

Love Sarah x

Hiya Terri

i think you are probably doing the right thing! My last miscarriage was following IVF. The 6 weeks scan showed a healthy heartbeat, and the 8 weeks scan showed no heartbeat so I had to have a small op to remove the products of conception.

It certainly made it harder for me & my hsuband to come to terms with after seeing a heart beating inside of me. We cried when we saw it and found it so hard to get that image out of our heads.

Good luck whatever you decide

Eve
xxx
