Rescue Icsi experiences?

Post by bebe »

Hello everyone,
I am very new to the board. but really need the support right now. My dh and I are in the middle of our 1st IVF attempt for unexplained infertility. The retrieval was yesterday and we got 17 eggs. We were optimistic. Then early this morning, we received a call telling us there was no fertilization. My doctor said he was shocked and wanted to try rescue icsi, but informed us the rates of fertilization and pregnancy are much lower. Of course we agreed to trying it. I got a call this afternoon, that they were able to do icsi on 10 of the 17 eggs. The remaining 7 were too immature. I don't have too much more information than that, my doctor may have said more, but none of it sunk in. The bottom line I was left with is, this isn't looking so good. And they don't know why this happened. Does anyone out there have any experience with rescue icsi that they could share. Or any ideas as to what is going on. I'm trying to stay upbeat - 10 sounds good. But with rescue icsi i guess all bets are off? Still hoping and praying though ...

Hi Bebe,
We have just completed our 2nd attempt at IVF this time with ICSI, 1st time around we had 10 eggs and none fertilized due to being immature and no shells, so we were advised to go down the ICSI route. We did and only 4 out of the 12 we had this time fertilized, 2 put back 2 weeks ago, unfortunately the remain 2 were not worth freezing but today we did HPT test and it is positive, so don't give up hope, ICSI we were told had more chance of fertilization and 1 in 4 go onto pregnancy.
Don't feel as this is a back step at least your DR has decided to continue which is good and the eggs must also be good quality.
I hope this helps abit.

Emma,
Thank you so much for your reply. It helps so much to hear your experience and know that others in a similar situation have had success. We too were told the eggs were too immature. We're still waiting to see how the rescue goes but its so helpful to hear of your success. Good luck!

We had to go through the same thing. Retrieved 24 eggs, none fertilized, and did rescue ICSI on 17 of them. We got 9 fertilized, and transferred 2 embryos 3 days later. the rest didn't make it to freezing. Unfortunately, we got a BFN. the doctor's are not sure what the cause was, but my husband does have low sperm morphology, and the embryologist said that the shell on my eggs appeared hard. We did assisted hatching. I read some studies, that the chance for pregnancy with rescue ICSI is much lower. We will be trying again in end of June with immediate ICSI. Good luck to you!
