I was a smoker and quit April 1st. I have been told that smoking does decrease the chances of success. If I was you I would def. try to quit not only for ttc but for your own health. I know its hard but you can do it, I quit after 12 years of smoking. Good luck!!!!

Hi Cheekscuss,

I am a smoker but I quit 5 1/2 months ago to be honest smoking is not good and can reduce your chances but dont forget that women who smoke have had babies down through the years. To be honest it would be best to cut down to 5 a day. sorry that I cant be more positive on this one.

Talk soon

I am so glad someone posted this because I thought maybe I was the only one. I am a smoker too and hate to admit it because I know it's so bad. I have cut down a lot since doing all of these treatments but haven't been able to quit completely. If I am pg I will def stop, but I know it's hard. I would try and cut down as much as you can if not quit completely but I guess I should also take my own advice :)

I was a smoker too. Just a little under a pack a day. My RE pretty much told me that she wouldn't treat me if I didn't quit smoking--said that the smoke really hurts the chances of the embryos implanting. So, I stopped in May of last year. Who knows if that's the reason why we lucked out and got a positive naturally after one in vitro bfn. I think it was the drugs that boosted my system, but I just couldn't rationalize spending all of this money and putting all of my hopes into this process and not giving it the best shot. So, yes, quitting smoking sucked, but I am glad that I did it. (But man, I still miss it like crazy!!!!!)

I found this on the web:
"PAH, a component of cigarette smoke and fossil fuel combustion, binds to what is called an Aromatic Hydrocarbon Receptor (AhR) on cells in ovary structures. When PAH attaches itself, it stimulates the ovaries to shut down the maturation process of eggs, resulting in an egg trapped in a non-ovulatory follicle. In other words, smoking can interfere with and even shut down ovulation, with obvious consequences for normal functioning of the menstrual cycle. Some scientists believe this evidence explains why women who smoke experience premature menopause. ... Dioxins and PCB's and other double and multi-ring structures can also bind to this receptor and wreak havoc on reproductive systems, but they do it in a less-known and different way than PAH. "
"Smoking lessens the chance of successful in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment and women should be actively encouraged to quit before undergoing IVF, researchers recommend… These data should lead us actively to discourage smoking among women before IVF treatment. The explanation may be that smoking causes vascular problems, which inhibit the embryo from implanting in the wall of the uterus," Full article at http://www.obgyn.net/newsrx/women's_hea ... 809-10.asp
Good Luck....

I am 34 and have been a smoker for about 14 years and though I knew the risks of continuing to smoke through out my IVF cycle, I took my chances and had a BFP on the first round. I am ashamed to admit this, but smoked through the entire process. I did quit at the start of my 2 WW and have not smoked since and I would not even consider starting again. But I do miss it like crazy.

My doc had me do wellbutrin...it seemed to help a little bit....My dh quit the same day and he was a heavy smoker (1 pack+ per day) and he did the nicotine gum.

It's so hard. Trust me, I know. But I'm so glad I did it...I really think that if you can do it before you get pregnant it's better for the baby. After all, you're really putting your body through a lot.

Good luck!

cheekskuss, I know my cousin smoked all the way through all 3 of her pregnancies and her kids are fine, but I of course would not do that. It looked so gross to her her smoking with a big belly in front of her. Thanks for making me feel better about the whole situation. Are you going to quit completely?
