Hello

I'm pregnant!!!!!!!!!!!!! Am 5 weeks + 4 days today.

I'm just wondering when other people get to have their first scan. Mine isn't booked until 23rd May when I'll be 9 weeks which seems like an eternity away.

When did you all get your first scans?

Does anyone think it would be advisable for me to pay for an extra scan at this point?

I'm just really worried because I lost my baby at 8½ weeks just after christmas but they didn't discover it until the 12 weeks scan. I'd had my first one at 8 weeks that time.

What does everyone else think about waiting till 9 weeks?

I suppose I know the outcome will be the same regardless of how many scans I have but I can't helping feeling it will set my mind at rest a bit.

What do you think and when did you have yours?

Sarah
Hi Sarah

Again congrats...nice to have you over here

I had my first scan at 6 weeks, I really did hassel my gp to send me to the epu, I think they did to shut me up and stop me being paranoid, I had a follow up at my clinic when I was 8 weeks. If they hadn't of given me the 6 week one i think I would have had a private one.

I am 13 weeks tomorrow and have had 4 scans so far, my gp has requested that I have a scan every 4 weeks due to the twins.

Love Mags
You lucky thing mags getting all those scans!

I think I'll call the clinic again and speak to someone else about it. I just can't decide what to do. I know if I have a 6 week one they're bound not to see very much and might not even see a heartbeat yet. I change my mind from one minute to the next.

Might leave it another couple of days if I can and see how I feel.

I think if I at least had 1 symptom I might be more reassure but I don't feel anything at all. Maybe next week something will turn up.

Love Sarah

ps - you're so lucky to be having twins! Are you feeling movements yet? Are you showing yet?
Congratulations Sarah, i'm really pleased for you.

I also tested positive!!!! I'm about the same as you I think I'm not sure how they work it out though.

I've had four scans since then because I have OHSS (ovaries trebled in size and loads of fluid surrounding everywhere! I look 6 months gone!!!!)

Even though I've had these scans they haven't seen anything yet because the uterus is surrounded by fluid. My six weeks scan is due on Friday and am hoping they will be able to see then. Surely you must have a scan at six weeks routine?

Well done!!!!!!!

love emma
x
Sarah,

Major Congratulations, I am so so so thrilled for you. I had my first scan at 7 weeks and saw heartbeats and everything, so I tihnk 9 weeks is a bit long, but it is up to you, after last time I think the extra scans should be on the NHS for your peace of mind as much as anything. One fiend told me if I wanted extra scans to tell them I had had a little bleeding or strange pains as they automatically scan you then. Sneaky but needs must!!

As for the symptoms...don't tempt fate. I was fine till 6 weeks and one day...I thought I wanted all the symptoms just so I could feel really pg and when they say be careful what you wish for...they ain't kidding. Then had nine weeks of queesiness and puking and being permanently knackered...but it is so worth it. I can't believe my two are going to be One next week.....aagghhh.

Anyway take care of you and once again I am so chuffed for you.
Nicky
Sarah
Congrats once again. I think you have to do whatever makes you more relaxed. We decided not to have early scans becuase we thought that ultimately it wouldn't change the outcome if anything bad did happen. We were going to wait for the 12 week but in the end I could only hold-out until 9 weeks because i was so paranoid.
On the subject of NHS v's private, we've been haing private scans all the way through this pg and I have to say the difference is amazing. They take you through every little thing and are so patient. It really is nice to be treated more like a person than just another neurotic mother.
Good luck with whatever you decide and and I'm soooooo pleased it worked out for you.
LOL
Terri
xxx
Sarah

Fantastic news - congratultions!!!

My clinic (Oxford) give scans at 6 and 8 weeks as a matter of routine. Since being discharged from their care, my next scan is at 12 weeks (I'm 11 weeks today!!). I have to admit I think I too would go crazy waiting 'til 9 weeks. Maybe you could check with your clinic/GP and see if you can beg one for 6 weeks - my scan then saw 2 sacs and little heartbeats!

take care of yourself and don't worry about symptons. As I say, I'm 11 weeks with twins and have been really lucky and hardly suffered any nausea, sickness or anything really. Long may it last!!

Helen xx
It's looks as though I might be alone in thinking that too many scans are not necessarily a good thing. While I think it's fantastic to be able to see your baby and gain peace of mind, I do wonder whether there are any long term adverse effects with relatively new technology.

I was speaking to a midwife last week about them, as the hospital that I will come under has now stopped the 20 week scan, and I was considering whether to have a private one carried out for peace of mind. But to be honest after speaking with her I don't feel that they are necessarily a good thing. She said that there is some evidence to show that ultra sound heats up cells, she also said that there is more leukemia in children than ever before (she didn't specifically say this was related to ultra sounds though) and she felt that in the future scans would not be offered on the NHS due to the risk of litigation. Obviously this was her personal opinion and could be disputed by other midwives or GPs.

Sorry if I sound like I'm scare mongering, but it's just that during our scan at 14 weeks, the baby flexed itself so much that it almost did a complete back bend, and I just felt that it was disturbed by the scan. I probably sound neurotic now too!!

Anyway good luck with what ever you decide Sarah, I hope that everything goes well for you with this pregnancy.

Take care,
Suzanne.x
