Fifth Disease exposure

Post by wannabeone »

Hi, I am a teacher and there has been at least one child in my class who has Fifths Disease. In kids it's not a big deal - low fever, rash, but if pregnant women are exposed, they can lose the baby 10% of the time. I had no idea. I had a blood test that will take ONE WEEK to get back to see if I have been exposed in the past. About 50% of women have had prior exposure. That is my main hope.

Has anyone known of a pregnant women to get infected and their baby was fine? 10% is low, but on top of the already 10% chance I will still lose this baby (I am 9.2 weeks) my chances are increasing. WTF?

Hi there,
Just wanted to say that I have had this stress during the last few weeks as well. My daughter attends a childminders and one of the other children developed slapped cheek the day after she saw DD. I phoned the midwife and they came and took my blood straight away, which made me a bit anxious. It took 3 weeks for my results to come back, very stressful, but it turns out I am immune. My parents don't ever remember me having this but obviously came into contact at some point!
I started asking lots of people about it, but not reading too much as this scared me! A lot of friends and friends of friends, had this as well as no-one ever lost the baby or had any effect from it. One was also a teacher and had to be signed off as it was passing through the class but she was fine.
Will look out for your results and I'm sure you'll be one of the immune ones too.
Thinking of you

Hi Wanna,

I too teach and got tested for Fifths and was immune. I never new I ever had it, but have been teaching for 8 years. Odds are if you have been teaching in an elementary school setting long enough, you are probably immune. Good luck!
