Please read - so confused

Hi girls.

I am so confused and want to tap into your wealth of knowledge.

I managed to get 16 eggs retrieved yeaterday and as I egg share I had 8 lovely eggs to work with. Today we got a call to say none of them had fertilised. This is our 7th attempt and we have never had a problem with fertilisation, just implanting. The other lady I gave my eggs to had all 8 fertilise. I am so confused and devestated.

The embryologist is really confused and said there is no obvious reason why it hasn't worked. Apparently the sperm is swimming around the egg trying to break through but its not happening yet. They are going to keep them going till tom but don't hold much hope.

Does anybody have any ideas? Similar experience? Anything that can help me understand or give me hope?

stilltrying - OMG, i'm so sorry. and so surprised too!! i dont really know what to say as i've never been in that situation but could you go for last minute ICSI? i know its more money but if you have it available it may be an option. praying for you!!and please let us know how you're getting on!

Thanks for your reply. I don't know anything about icsi, have just looked at link on the side of this page and it sounds great. I will ask my embryologist when she calls back lunch time. Would have thought they would have given us that option???

leanne - yes, i would have thought that they would think of something like that. but mention it anyway, you've got nothing to lose. please keep us updated!

Sorry to hear that Stilltrying.

They may not have mentioned about ICSI because the eggs have to be very mature to have this procedure.

A similar thing happened to me a few weeks back, I paid for ICSI, they collected 6 eggs, but only one was mature enough for ICSI, a day later the other 5 eggs matured and they done ICSI on them, they all got fertilised and started dividing, but then they stopped, I was told it was because they were a day late in maturing and fertilising.

When the embryologist told me about the 5 that wasn't mature enough, I asked her if they would have been good enough to use for IVF, she replied they may of stood a better chance, but yet when I asked if they could just try with them, they said no because my hubby has a low sperm count, which I found was out of order, because if they had put the sperm with the 5 eggs together on the day of EC, I may of had some survivers, I do feel cheated and annoyed by this, as I was the one paying for all of this, but yet they wouldn't offer me every chance possible.

I hope it all works out for you in the end.

Oh, I am so sorry! You must be very frustrated and sad. I hope the embryologist can give you some answers. I know my clinic does ICSI when there are only a few (under 10 eggs) an/or if the age of the mother is over 37 and/or if there is a male factor. Are you able to try again? Perhaps they will be better prepared a second time or you could switch clinics. Take care and keep us posted. (((((hugs)))))

Oh Pat I am so sorry to read your news. It all like one big that they keep changing the rules for isn't it.
I asked about icsi and they said we couldn't do it this time bcause we had sighned up for it at the start of the treatment.
We still haven't heard back from the embryologist to see what they have found out about our eggs etc. Will keep you posted. Pat I hope you get more trust in your clinic next time x

oh my god Leanne, that's awful, i am deverstated for ya, this IVF shit is hard!!!
sending you hugs!! I really dont know what to say, honey. I know nothing about it, i wonder why???
Your clinic should be able to shed light to why though......
