IVF or IUI?

Post by snemo »

We were told by our RE that our egg quality was not good with the last IVF with ICSI. We did get pregnant but it ended in a m/c. So now that we are faced with using a donor, I am trying to think of an alternative.
Instead of IVF again, I was thinking of IUI with donor sperm. I know that the chances are slim for us but I was thinking at least this will give us another shot at my ovaries. I can't seem to give them up yet. Should I? I guess my question is, is one shot at IVF a final decision on my eggs and their quality.

Need advice.

Snemo, first of all I am very sorry about your m/c, same thing happened to me, I know how sad it is. I am glad you are moving forward though!!, that is so great. About your question, I am not an expert on this of course, but from what I know and heard around here I can tell you this. First of all, why if your egg quality was poor you are looking for sperm donor instead of egg donor?. Second, is your DH's sperm defective? (otherwise, I don't see what is the benefit of using donor sperm...). Third, besides the egg quality, what was the original problem why you had to go to IVF in the first place?, depending on what that is, IUI might not be a very good alternative and you would just be wasting your money.
Hope I can be of more help, maybe after you answer some of this questions.
I wish you the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, originially my DH has low sperm count and poor morphology with antisperm antibodies. They said that IVF with ICSI is the only way to go. But with our first try with the IVF they said that my egg quality was bad too and so I may have m/c. So we both have issues. I have not given up on my ovaries just yet and it's hard for me to just except that my eggs are bad, without knowing why. They couldn't give me an explanation. So before I fork over 30K for donor eggs, I wanted to try another option with IUI with donor sperm and see if there is any luck there. Do you think I'm crazy? Are all eggs that bad all the time. I had one 4 and all others were 3s but fragmented.

I would not give up with one try. I had a similar outcome and mc with my 1st IVF. For the second round they changed my regimen and the result was better egg quality and pregnancy! I don't know all of your circumstances but I wish you the best!

Snemo, I agree with IVFmomof1, I wouldn't give up with just one try, the m/c could have been a chromosomal abnormality that is very common, it is the most common cause of m/c, and it doesn't necessarily mean that your eggs are guilty of it. If I would be you I would try IVF again with your eggs instead of IUI (I know it's more money than IUI, but you have much more chances, and it's less money than donnor eggs). Talk to your RE about all of this possibilities, also about changing your protocol to make sure you get the best egg quality possible....
GOOD LUCK!!!!

Snemo, I would try again with your eggs, i don't know about your clinic but the average success rate for IVF is only 25%, so the chance of getting pregnant first time is very lucky. I have done one full IVF and 2 FET's and had two positives both ending within a week. these are classed as bio-chemical and my Dr said it is the most common result from IVF, they register them daily. I take the positive that i can get pregnant the problem is keeping hold of them, I have undergone further tests chromosone being one of them i get my results in August and we will take it from there.
Good luck
