Abnomality with ICSI ???

Post by Anie »

Hello.

I was told that me and dh will have to do ICSI so i was reading all the information about ICSI on this website.

I read about abnormalities on page 4 under ICSI:
"This is mainly because of the risk of injecting an abnormal sperm since ICSI bypasses the natural stages of sperm maturation and selection."

Now im confused! The doctor or the fertility specialist, they choose the best sperm to inject, don't they? They can see which one is normal and which one is abnormal.....

It also says that the couple should be offered some test & screening to check the abnormalities....

Has anybody gone thru this?
Can anybody give me some more informations, please?

Thank you very much.

Hi Anie, Sorry you have to go the ivf route. what it means is as we are being stimulated to mature a greater No of eggs, and the sperm selection is done for us although they choose the best ones, some of the eggs and sperm will have abnormal cells it is normal, however if we did not need help these eggs/sperm would never fertilise. but because they get assistance they do, that is why the success rates are quite low. I hope i havn't confused you more. if you need any more info just ask. I have done icsi and got 12 fertilised good quality eggs.
All the very best and good luck.

We just went through ICSI. Of the 22 eggs (15 mature) I asked then to do a few regular IVF just so we would know if it worked. Out of the 4 they did with IVF 3 did actually fertilize. 10 of the 11 ICSI fertilized. So although they showed that my husband had 98% - 100% amorphous sperm once cleaned up and put next to the egg some of the natural fertilization did work. If you get enough eggs you may want to check with your clinic about this just so you know for future reference. My doctor said he wouldn't consider it unless he got more than 12 mature eggs.

Anyway we were told that they do pick the sperm that look the most normal but they cannot tell internal chromosomal things by looking at the external shape. They said if the fertilization happens and there was a chromosome issue that the embryo usually stops growing or ends in an early miscarraige. (6 of our 10 ICSI did arrest prior to day 5 at the 6-8 cell stage while all of the IVF made it to day 5.) I don't know what is typical but I just thought I would share our experience.

There is a slightly increased risk of birth defects though and your clinic should review that with you.

We ended up doing a 5 day transfer - one from IVF and one from ICSI. I got a positive blood test on Tuesday with a beta of 738 at 14dp5dt so we are very happy that things look good so far.

Good luck to you and you should ask your clinic any questions that you have as well.

We did icsi & are 13 weeks pg with twins. We had our nt us last week & are completely neg for down syndrome. I haven't heard of an increased risk with icsi but, I think if you look hard enough they say there's an increased risk with anything wait until you're pg that's when it really gets scary, you won't even want to eat.

Anie,

Traditionally ICSI is used for men with sperm problems like abnormality, motility etc which is probably why the info on this website directs it more to that. But ICSI is also used for other reasons too like for men that have had vasectomies and or failed reversals.

I like you remember reading an article in The Times some 5 years ago and it stated that the male children of men using ICSI will also inherit the same problems. Needless to say I nearly passed out but such a sensational article. By looking into this further I found out it only applied to those that are using ICSI because they have abnormal sperm issues and not for others.

I had ICSI bcoz my hubby had a vasectomy before and I have been assured he had no abnormal sperm.

I wish you loads of luck in your cycle and don't worry, it will work out.

Hi.

Just want to say thank you to all who shared your experience in this post.

In my case, dh has good count but only 25% are moving and out of those 25% only 1.5% are fast enough. That's the reason why we were advised to go for ICSI.

Anyways, I shall clear all my questions on my next appoint.
Wish all the best to everybody on this journey.

we did ICSI because it was our 3 rd IVF, and sometimes they do it just because of the failure in previous cycles.
