Second Level Sono

Post by beauty19 »

Hi Girls!

It's been a while, but I am glad to see everyone's progress is going well. We just went on Monday for our second level sono (I am 20 weeks) and received some unexpected news. I am having twins and one of the girls is much smaller than the other. My doctor was not happy with this, especially at this stage. He said it is common for one to be bigger but not this early. The only thing that gives me hope is that both babies' organs and body parts are there and the heartbeats are strong. I am now on bed rest until July 2 when I go to repeat the sono to see if she has grown and caught up. I am freaking out!! Has this happened to anyone else? My doctor said that he has seen it go both ways. Best case scenario, I have two healthy girls, worst case, one. Needless to say, I did not like hearing that.

Please send some positive thoughts my way,
Deb

deb congrats on having twins. i do not have any experience with this situation but seems very hopefull that they are both developing even though its not at the same pace.
i'm sure it will work out fine. try not to stress too much in the next week. i'll be going in for my first scan the same day as your second scan. it's a good day to get a lot of good news.

all the best

Hi Erica!

I really appreciate the response, since no one else even bothered. I am trying to stay as positive as possible and so far, so good. I wish you all the best on your sono.

Deb- Are your girls identical or fraternal twins? I had identical twins and they watched me closely for twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome. It is a condition where all the nutrients go to one twin and the other one doesn't get enough. I developed a mild case towards the end of my pregnancy and one twin was about a pound larger than the other one.

I know several women who had fraternal twins and one was smaller than the other. They went on bedrest and their smaller twin did catch up. Be sure to eat a lot of protein, as that is supposed to help put weight on the babies.

Good luck!

How are things going on bed rest? You didn't say how much smaller in your original post, do you know? One thing I have found to be very true is that every OB feels differently about what is or isn't a serious issue. My twins were quite different in the beginning and started to catch one another by week 12. Some people had RE's worried about stuff like that and mine was very relaxed.
I think the important thing is to be relaxed yourself and not fret too much about it. Just try to keep as healthy and positive as you can. We think these babies are so fragile and I just keep hearing stories of how strong and resiliant they really are. Gives me lots of encouragement to know that.

Take care and vent here all you need, even if it takes people a few days to get back to you. :)

Baby A is 7.5 oz. and Baby B is 9.5 oz. The girls are fraternal and Baby B, according to my OB, is exactly where she should be and Baby A needs to catch up. I am on modified bed rest, which gives me an exuse to get some things done. I am taking it easy though and spending most of my time off my feet. I am drinking TONS of water and will crank up the protein. My OB did not say anything about that, only the importance of drinking a lot.

My twins are almost 1.5 oz off each other right now and my OB isn't worried at all. I would say your OB is just being very careful which is nice. Can't hurt anything to be more careful. I'm glad you are getting a chance to catch up. It won't be long before extra time is a thing of the past! :D

Take care~
