Poll: How many eggs/embryos?

Post by Babyb »

We just cycled with a donor (proven 3 times before) to no avail. We are completely shocked we did not get pregnant. She had 26 eggs, 22 fertilized and 15 embryos. After biopsy, only 8 were normal. We implanted 4 and no pregnancy. The remaining 4 are very bad quality.

We are looking at a new donor (2 times proven), but her numbers are even less. First 1vf, she had 23 eggs but only 10 became embryos. Her 2nd cycle she got only 17 eggs so I imagine only about 8-10 embryos (but no confirmation). Isn't this low for a donor?

Would be interested in the experience from others.

Always remember, it is not the quantity it is the quality.

We had DE tmt last June, our donor was 23 yrs old and had a child of her own. She produced 12 eggs, resulting in 9 embryos. We had 4 put back and we are now the proud parents of our precious baby boy, born 23rd Jan this year. I think it all depends on the individual, the quality of the eggs/embryos and also the recipient's uterus! Have you asked your clinic about your concerns?

Hi

I am just in the middle of ym first cycle of IVF and our egg donor was a 1st timer. She was 28 with 2 children and she produced 9 eggs of which 5 fertilised.
I wasn't ready in time so unfortunately we have had to freeze them all..
I originally hoped for more but now just glad of what I have got and hope there is one lucky one amongst them...

Hi we are also proud aprents of one son born 2006 through DE. We had 11 egs 10 fertilised 8 good, 4 transferred (BFP 1 baby, 4 frozen. Our donor, 26 had one son. The quality is all that counts, so the numbers you are talking about alert me to overstimulation of the donor, so poor egg quality, a good result is about 10 eggs. On top of that, you should be sure your diagnosisi of not getting pg is absolutely exhaustive. It may have been more than just poor own eggs. It may be however good the eggs are:
1. Sperm could be substandard (my dh was later diagnosed with problems with sperm quality after exhaustive tests)
2. You could ahve other things going on (they found I had autoimmune thyroiditis which would attack a foetus)

so use the experience to nag for answers, and ask if the donors are being stimmed fairly and gently, if not change clinics - bev and I can recommend ISIDA

I know there are some publications supporting what you say and many clinicians will echo your statement. I can also say that, at our clinic, there does not seem to be any decrease in average egg or embryo quality with high oocyte yield. I suspect it's some clinic-specific effect, perhaps due to the practices used at some clinics to try to reduce OHSS risk.

Just a quick question for those getting donar eggs. Our IVf worked on round one and we are blessed and pg w/ twins. Since I had such a great response to treatment I looked into donating eggs after the babies were born but at 33 I find that I am too old??? I had 49 eggs, 36 fertilized and after 3 were implanted I had 26 top grade embrios to freeze. He didn't even keep the average ones because we had so many good ones. After results like that, am I still a poor canidate to help someone else just because I am 33??

I know there are other factors but it just seemed like a good thing I could do and was quickly shot down. Just looking for input from those who would be receiving.

thanks,
Kimberly

Some clinics may cut off egg donation before age 33. I don't know. I know ours does not.

Your results sound excellent, better than many "ideal" 25 year olds. Your proven record *should* count heavily in your favor.
