DH age 53 - I am 33...1st attempt IVF/ICSI

Post by ICSI GIRL »

Is there ANYBODY out there in similar boat????? Am brand new to this message board stuff - but find as we get closer to ER date (week of Aug 6) - I'm in a panic!!! "Our" infertility issues are entirely male factor.... did every test in the book and I seem to be a-ok. DH age is primary reason according to RE as the little swimmers have tired w/ age. RE says odds in our favor.....is EXTREMEMLY optimistic for 1st round success. I remain very guarded and we have chosen to not discuss w/ family/friends (atleast not at this point)

Guess I'm just looking for some conversation w/ people going through same thing.....been a visitor to these boards for long time now - w/ 1st depo shot on 7/18, thought what better time than the present to jump right in!

Thanks for listening - sorry for the novel - wasn't even sure where/how to start...... :?

First I woud like to wish you the best with your first cycle.
Our issue was male as well....We did a fresh cycle with ICSI and it did not work..We did a frozen cycle the next month and it worked. I was told by one IVF clinic we would never get pregnant. I did not like that answer and went to another clinic. DO not give up hope. Please hang in there and welcome to the board.
We live in Michigan as well. What clinic are you going to?

Hi ICSI Girl,

I am in exactly the same boat but please don't consider me the norm. We were told that our issue was male factor - a vasectomy reversal that didn't work well enough. We have been doing ICSI and have been unsuccessful so far. My husband is also much older than I.

Did you RE mention anything about the quality of the sperm changing with age. I know that the count and morphology can decrease but my understanding is that ICSI can overcome that. No one has said anything to me about the inherent quality of the sperm. The reason I ask is that our doctor has told us that the reason we haven't maintained a pregnancy (I've had 3 chemical pregnancies) is that we likely have chromosonal abnormalities in the embryo. I am trying to understand how that could be - is it the sperm or is it the eggs? Since no one has ever commented to me that the quality of the sperm might decrease with age (and my husband has children from a previous marriage without assistance), I am wondering if it is my eggs? Sorry for the long winded message.

Hi there,

We also have strictly male-factor infertility- my husband had an accident when he was a teenager and basically has a vasectomy. He is not too old now- 40- and when they extracted his sperm the embryologist said it was fine. It had low motility, but he said that was due to being immature (they harvested it from his testicle) and not due to age, and for ICSI the motility doesn't matter anyway. I did all those tests too and came through with flying colors. I start meds for our first IVF/ICSI on July 23, and our RE also thinks we have excellent chances for success. But of course anything can happen, and I'm so nervous just like you, ICSI GIRL. On this forum I read the success stories and the frustrated couples still trying, and I don't know what to expect. Skidoo, congratulations! And best wishes for a healthy pregnancy and baby. Kellym, I'm so sorry to hear it hasn't worked for you so far. How many IVF cycles have you done?

ICSI girl, several of us going through our first IVF cycles in July/August have started a support-group thread called 1st IVF in August- Any possible cycle buddies? Please join us if you want!

Hello girls. I just wanted to let you know that my husband had all the same issues. He had zero sperm. I was fine which I think is better as we are the ones who have to hold onto the eggs and carry the baby. We went through ICSI last summer and now I have a beautiful baby girl (three months old).

Do not give up hope. We were successful on our first try and am going for baby number two this year. It might take a few tries but you should be having your own baby soon enough.

Good Luck

We also suffered from male issues only--there was sperm there, it was just a very low count. The doctor told us that she wouldn't even try insemination, just go right to icsi. We did and had a bfn our first try. Very disappointed to say the least. However we had 7 embies frozen so were going to try an FET the very next month--our doctor assured us that it was just a "numbers game" and that FETs are actually a lot more successful because there are less drugs involved. However, we actually conceived on our own that month. 5 years and no birth control and then we conceive that month. I really believe that the drugs just kick started everything.
Anyway, I'm a great example of how you just never know what to expect in this crazy world of ivf. (I'm 30, dh is 40 by the way!) I wish you all the best of luck and for those of you just starting, don't give up hope! Miracles happen everyday!

Our issue was male factor as well. DH is 39 but only 1% morphology. I am 33 and tested fine on every test. 1st IVF ICSI was successful - currently 10 weeks pregnant.

Good Luck!

Very anxious, excited and nervous - so you are not alone!

Hello ICSI girl,

I am in the same boot too. My husband 60, I am 33. He had a visectomy and we thought that we would have to have a reversal and we would be fine. But his doctor said that for such period of time he had the visectomy there is a chance that his testicles developed antibodies which kill sperm. Has anyone ever heard such thing???

Well, we had a sperm extracted from my husband's testicle. We started our first ICSI last Jan-Feb. There were 7 eggs collected. 6 of them were ok for fertilisation. The doctor said that out of 6 we had only 2 very good embryos. We had 2 embryos transfered.

I got pregnant but 2 weeks after 1st HCG test I miscarried. The doctor said that it happened because of the chromosomal abnormalities but I don't understand the abnormality of my egg or embryo???

Now we will have to go through the entire process again since we do not have any frozen embryos. I am scared to death to go through that again.

Maybe in a month or two we will go for the second cycle. I hope it will work this time.

Good luck to everyone!

Hi Betty......is very interesting to learn about other people going through EXACTLY the same things --- is also very comforting :-) The one "good" thing we have going is that my dh never had vasectomy and has 2 children from prior marriage (concieved naturally).....RE just thinks dh sperm not strong enough to penetrate egg.....

Have you decided when you'll try another round??

Betty - we are in EXACTLY the same boat. I am 35, my DH is 62 (the same age difference between you and yours). We have now been through 5 IVF rounds. Three we had early miscarriages as you've just had. We are trying to figure out why this is happening.

As with your DH, mine had a vasectomy reversal (12 years after his original vasectomy). Our first RE told us exactly what yours told you - that over that period of time the body likely built up antibodies against his sperm. So, like you, we were told that ICSI was our only route. That is what we've done. We've had good fertilization and apparently great looking embryos eachtime. We achieved pregnancy 3 times but then had early miscarriages. And each time we are told that there must be some chromosomal abnormality in the embryos. The only question they haven't been able to answer is whether it is the sperm causing the problem or the eggs.

My DH just found research on the weekend that suggests that males who have had reversals performed after a prolonged period have a higher chance of chromosomal abnormalities in their sperm. This is the article...
http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/ ... 062006.php

Perhaps before starting into your next cycle you could ask for testing on the sperm to see whether any of these abnormalities exist. I am meeting with my RE on July 24 so we are going to push this testing. I would hate for you to go through what we have if the problem resides can't be fixed through ICSI and resides in the sperm.

We've been to two clinics and neither one suggested this as a possibility but I suppose the research is fairly new (June 2006).

Best of luck and let me know if you find anything else!
Kelly
