new born circumcision

Post by deepa100 »

Hi,
DH and I need to make a decision on whether to circumcise our baby boy (my c-section is now in 8 days) or not. I would like to know what others on this forum think about this topic. we live in the US.

I vote yes. We are going to have it done for sure but I think now days it is just a personal choice. I feel like it's cleaner and just more normal here in the US. I know our insurance does not cover it though. I found that odd but we are still doing it.
Best of luck with your upcoming c-section. I bet you are getting really excited!!!! Can't wait to hear how you are doing after he arrives!
Take care~

Hi Kimberly,
Thanks for your response. Our insurance does cover it (can you believe it!). But my husband, who is an American is also not sure if he wants it done. Here in the US, doctors seem to be too willing to do surgeries too fast so, we always take our time thinking thr' stuff like this. Does a pediatrician do it before you leave the hospital? How does that work? I will have to talk to my obgyn tomorrow when I see him.

I did here that circumcision helps to prevent spread of infections.

I admire you for really thinking about it. There are other things that we aren't sure on yet, like certain shots, but I need to read more about it. We are quick to do things like this here in the US so it's smart to take your time. At least you are thinking about it now instead of when you are in the hopital and forced to make a choice. It's easier on them the sooner you do it if you decide to go ahead with it.
I have a lot of Jewish friends and have attended a ton of brisks for their sons and it does give me some comfort to see them circumsized on the 8th day and most of them hardly cried at all with only a few swallows of wine.
Good luck and I'm sure you'll make the right choice for your son either way.

Hi,

My first son they did it when he was in the hospital so I didn't have to "deal" with it much and was glad we did it. My second son we had to do it at the pediatricians office and they explained the procedure and the risks and benefits. They basically balance each other out. I was very nervous about being there when it was done. And I felt very guilty that we were basically doing it for cosmetic reasons. It is kind of a harsh procedure I was surprised how complicated it was, I just thought they did a few snips. My son was very good and did not even cry much, but I felt so awful for putting him through it. But when it all comes down to it, I think as an adult and teenager living in the US he will be glad to have it done. I think it is more clean and I'm sure he does not even remember it was ever even done. If I were you and I had a choice get it done at the hospital and don't be present. But anyway that's my 2 cents worth- good luck!

we did not circumcise our son (he's now 9yrs old). there's many adult benefits to being "uncut" and i think it's less unusual in the US then it used to be. my husband figured that if our son decided he wanted to change its something that can be done at any time. but at least it would be his choice what to do with his body. there is no evidence of it being unhealthy or unsanitary to be uncut.
check out dr dean adell's (sp?) advice on it. he has a lot of good things to say

good luck

Thanks for all the responses!

I think we will wait on this. I will need time to recover from the c-section, I don't want to worry about my baby's incision too. In a few weeks, we will go see a pediatric urologist and get his opinion on it. For one, my husband (who is born in Germany to American parents and did get circumcised as a baby ) is not convinced that we should do it. Even if we decide to get it done, I would rather have a ped urologist do it than my OB.

Hi
Congrats on the birth of your son!

In the UK, this is not a routine procedure as there are supposedly no justifiable medical reasons to do it routinely. That said, i understand in the US it is done to most baby boys.
Customs are strange things and I think it is entirely up to you. Only thing I will say is that apparently there is loss of sensation during sex in circumsized men.....no doubt reported by an uncircumsized man!!!!!

We have decided to circumcision on boy. In our region it is more common to have a circumcision than not. It is entirly an elective procedure. Not sure if out insurance covers it or not but we are doing it.

Living here is the states, I am going to have my baby boy circumcised. I am 26 weeks with twins (boy & girl) and have not started to shop yet for pediatrician's. I do have a question, who does the circumcision, is it your OB or the pediatrician you choose? There is one pediatrician I have in mind, but he does not have rights at the hospital where my OB will deliver and said that they would do it in the office a couple weeks after birth. Just hate to delay. Any insight on this would be appreciated. I have also heard that all hospitals have a pediatrician on call and they may do it (won't know till you deliver though).
