The docs I work with like to start with the shots, to get the levels up quickly, then transition to suppositories to sustain the levels. They may return a patient to the injections if the levels decline too much while on the suppositories.
Some docs use injections until 10 weeks.
Some published studies say there is not much difference in effectiveness between the shots and suppositories.

This is my first IVF cycle and I had the same concerns as you. I know my dr. used to use the injections as his protocol until about 2 months ago. His practice now uses crinone progesterone gel after several studies being done on the effectiveness and outcomes between the different types of progesterone.
My doctor has me on both. One shot per day and 3 suppositories per day. I'm not sure how long I'll take them. I'm over 6 weeks now. I have an appointment with my clinic tomorrow so will find out something then.
Me = 34, DH = 33; TTC for 6 years
Due 3/13/08 - Baby Girl!!!!
I've been a patient at 2 clinics and they both have me on shot when I'm doing IVF. Suppo. was only used when we did IUI. The nurse told me that if I get pregnant, I will continue the injection until 10~12 weeks.
When I was pregnant I was on the shots for about 10 weeks but started having a reaction and then turned to the suppo's for anther four weeks. I actually perfered the shots (believe it or not) but neither was all that great. But I had the same results with both

What is the crinone progesterone gel? My doctor didn't mention it. I'm starting my first IVF and I'm scheduled to have both shots and suppositories, like shellbell, for at least 6 weeks.
I only use the suppositories for the 2 week wait after transfer after that I'm on my own!!!
ME 33 & DH 38 unexplained infertility.
1st full ivf jan 2001 - twins. 1 frostie - didn't survive thawing

1 frostie - fet June 2003 - baby born March 2004
3rd full IVF May/June 07 - BFP - born Feb 2008
I've only done supp. However, I switched clinics and this doctor only does the shots. (which in some ways kind of stinks. My last treatment no eggs fertilized. So I spent money on the supp, and only used one or two of them). I have not started the shots yet. I guess it depends on the doctor. I am not sure if there is one that is better than the other. I guess I will see soon.
