new and want to be a single mom

Post by pequele »

Hi! I just turned 34, I feel like I am never going to find Mr Right and I just don't want to run out of time! I have looked at options of adoption but the costs are so insane...not that fertility treatment is cheap, don't get me wrong, but I certainly have more options when it comes to trying to have a biologic child financially. I have investigated IUI with donor sperm.

Are there any other single women here? What have you attempted?

Other questions I have for people...please let me know if there are more appropriate places to post these...

What are the chances of concieving with donor sperm in IUI?
What should I expect from my initial appointment...I have yet to make one, I am a little nervous to start.
I have been taking birth control (yes I know strange to be on these boards) to regulate myself, how long should I be off of it before attempting IUI or any treatment they deem neccessary? This is really one of my biggest questions

thanks!

What a relief to hear of someone else in the same situation as me.
I'm 37 and also given up hope of finding Mr Right. Started looking into IUID last year and have now had 2 attempts - due 3rd go next week.

I've been told chances are about 15% per cycle (same as normal conception).

I was also taking the pill before I decided to do this. Wasn't told how long to be off it but stopped after first appontment with clinic. Had to have blood tests and lap and dye just to check everything normal before starting so this took a few months.

Don't expect it to be easy. Everyone I've told has been really supportive and the clinic nurses are great but its not the same as having a partner to go through this with.

hope I've answered some of your questions
Would love to hear how you get on

I utilized donor sperm with IUI...my docs told me I could start on my 3rd cycle after Birht control pills. My IUI took on the first attempt. We feel very blessed!

they are actually letting me start just as soon as tests are complete. I have had my blood work....except they lost my typing so I have to redo that...but I think I recall I am O+ so no big worries. We are waiting to do my physical exam in Aug....hoping to push it thru the insurance as that was when my last anual was. I don't have to do a dye test.

I stopped my b/c the day before my apt. This month I am practising my ovulation kit, I will have my physical, then after my next AF I should get to do my IUI. I am thinking I am purchasing my DS on Monday...if I could just make up my freakin mind!!!!

How much choice do you get on DS there? :? Due to the shortage in Britain I only had 2 to choose from and only really know hair/eye colour, height/build and occupation so wasn't difficult.

We get all sorts of info, choices from any in the bank we pick to use are available (provided they have vials available for the procedure you are doing of course). I can see pics, characteristics like dimples or attached ear lobes etc, family medical history including their physical characteristics and more.

To be honest, it is making it really hard haha! I want to make a decision because one of my top choices is low on vials and I just CAN'T!!! grrrr

Well done for deciding - I bet it all seems more real now!
Had my first scan for this cycle today and it looks like the clomid's working too well this time - got 2/3 medium follies each side. Bit worried they'll cancel if still too many at next scan on Thurs :(

Funny on the differences, you with not getting much choice in DS and me, if I use clomid they wouldn't monitor (guess I am not likely to have a litter??)

I go back and forth on whether to try clomid right off the bat. I worry about it thinning my lining. But I'd love for it to increase my chances of producing an egg or 2 and therefore getting a better chance at a fertilized egg! Ugh

I wasn't offered Clomid straight off but have very irregular cycles and the stress of starting treatment made me stop ovulating so started it after 2 cancelled cycles. Even first course of Clomid did nothing - had 9 week cycle that time
Double dose did the trick for last 2 cycles but not sure its working this time. Had another scan today and my ovaries are working overtime! (can feel them too) Lots of little follicles and a few larger ones but nothing obviously dominant.
I can't believe this is happening again just when I thought clomid was working. :(
Got to test over w/e just in case and go for scan again mon.
Feeling really down now but trying to keep positive
fingers crossed for mon

new to this and considering being a single parent

Post by dfisher »

hi
this is my first posting here, so i'm a bit nervous. i'm 25, soon to be 26 and considering becoming a single parent through AI. My reason for doing this is due in part to my mom having been diagnosed with cervical cancer at a fairly young age (30) and my grandmother also having gotten breast cancer (although she was older). I have considered adoption, but I want a child of my own.
I am still doing research on different options, and would love to talk to anyone who is considering also being a single parent.
I look forward to hearing from anyone.

Hi Deanna
It's great to hear from another singley doing this. There's not many of us on here but all the ladies are really supportive.
How far have you got with the process? Have you approached a clinic yet?
Good luck with your journey and feel free to pm me if I can help with anything.

Hi there, I'm not in the same situation as you but wanted to share that my friend had a little boy the same year I did from having IUI's with donor sperm. I think it took 3 attempts. Then she decided to do it again and now has a 2nd little boy who is 8 months old. She's single and has never had any regrets.......she has 2 wonderful little boys!!!
Good luck everyone!
