Marijuana use during fertility meds?

Post by julianna26 »

Hello all, I am starting my first IVF cycle with ICSI this month. I just got back from Indiana this weekend to visit family. I was talking to my cousin about starting my shots because she is going through the same thing (without ICSI). She starts her shots in a week. She and her husband smoke marijuana a couple times a week and she is not planning to stop smoking throughout her meds. But quit smoking if/when she gets BFP... Do you think this is wise or would have any effect on the fertility shots? I was curious if she was doing the right thing, and if anyone out there smoked at all during their IVF treatment and still got a BFP?

I defintily do not the know the answer to that but I have heard that smoking maurijana is equivalent to smoking a pack of cigerettes a day. If it where me I would do anything I could to increase my chances. I smoked cigerettes for almost ten years but when I knew that we where going to do IVF the research out there says that it can lower your chances, so I quit. If i where them I would do whatever it took to try and quit.

amybbc - I was thinking the same thing! I was REALLY surprised when she said that like it was nothing and it's been bothering me a little ever since. I guess it's none of my business really and I should stay out of it but I almost want to say something because she's family and I don't understand why she would want to take the risk!? I'm not sure what I'm going to do - if I will say anything or not. Thought I would see what others on this forum thought about it.

I don't even think I need the added stress of worrying about her while I am going through my cycle so I think at this point, I'm just going to keep my mouth shut.

I would think that it would hurt your chances of implantation. My doc told me she wouldn't even treat me if I was still smoking (just nicotine cigs)---she said it had nothing to do with the nicotine but that the carbon monoxide in the smoke can prevent the embryos from implanting. I can't imagine taking the chance of it not working just because I couldn't give something up!

I am sorry to be so direct - but this post has made me really upset. and to be honest I hope she does not get a BFP!

If you can't stop smoking marijuana during the treatment - I doubt she will give up during the pregnancy - and I seriously doubt the husband will also give up. Fine it adults want to smoke but don't bring another human into this world who will be impacted and doesn't have the ability to make a decision.

I agree with all of you. That's why I've been upset over it. But I am trying to reduce the stress in my life so I need to stop thinking about her (and her stupidity). I'm wrestling with telling her it's stupid to continue to do it (she smokes cigs too and drinks a lot) but I have enough on my mind worrying about if mine will work (and I'm doing everything right!). But she's family and maybe I will call her and say hey, this has been bothering me... but my DH thinks it's none of my business and she was stupid (and he's right) for even saying it out loud like she was proud of it or something. I really need to quit worrying about her but it's easier said than done. But I agree with you, Tracii, why even have a child if you are going to continue to do childish things?

Quite an informative post. Thanks to my friend who took me to opiate detox Norfolk for addiction treatment. Trying it since months to quit drugs but was not able to. Got fabulous help and counseling from doctors. Atmosphere was quite friendly and understanding.
