pio shots - help!

Post by dublinmask »

I'm wondering if anyone can give me any suggestions to make the PIO shots more tolerable. I've been taking them for the past 5 nights about 7-8 pm and about 4 am I wake up in such pain! My entire buttcheek muscle is so sore I can barely move. dh has given them with me standing (no weight on side shot is administered on), lying down, with and without ice before and with a heating pad or wet microwaved towel after. Massage for 5-10 min after, and I've tried both not walking too much after, and also taking a short walk to distribute the drug through the muscle. I've tried all the above-mentioned things - either the nurses suggested, or board posters have recommended. One of the 5 shots I got did not cause excruciating pain later, so I've tried to duplicate exactly what we did, but sure enough this morning at 4 am I woke up dying. This time I did take 2 Tylenol which did help but if anyone can PLEASE give me other suggestions, I really really need them! The pain basically lasts all day and dies down from excruciating to painfully tolerable a few hours before the next shot comes. Lucky me.

Wish I could help you I just started myPIO LASTNIGHT mY RE GAVE ME THE 1ST INJECTION but i was fine after it she said its best to do it standing and leaning against something..she also drew a circle aroud the area that my DH should inject in. Also try to warn the medication prior to injecting i was told to but it between your breasts for 15 mins to warm the oil a bit. Good luck...

Try to make sure he is doing them on the upper outer quadrant of your butt. The closer you are to the spine, the more likely you can hit some nerves and really make it worse. I have done them in my thighs too, but you do get a bit of dead leg the next day. I also wholeheartedly support the warming of it before you inject. Do you draw it up with a larger needle and then inject with a smaller gauge?? That can help too.

All the best!

Make sure DH is giving you the injection very very slowly, since one of the things that hurt is the sudden stretching of the muscle to make space for the PIO, while if you do it slowly it distributes better. Also, it is better to relax the muscle completely, to do that lie down and point the foot inwards (the side where you are giving the shot).
Hope it helps.

pain less prick

Post by mina »

hi there,
it worked for me i hope it will work for u too.
just collect just skin and pinch it between ur thumb and fingers...or ur husband can do it....then dont just push needle as the only pain is the prick part from the top of needle and rest when it goes i skin layer underneath it does not hurt at all....dont try to keep injection straight as it can hurt the muscle....just keep it on 90 degree angle and just insert the tip part and then rest u will not feel at all.....i used to make lots of drama before blood test and no one in my family can trust that i injected in my tummy......the day i tried without collecting the skin ...it was hurting...i wish i was close to u and could show u and ease ur pain....take care and god bless

Try putting a heating pad on the injection site prior to getting the injection. Have you hubby adminsiter the medication very slow. Also warming the vial before you draw it up under you arm might help. They will get easier. Hang in there....
