I am misrable, any advice?? on 6th night of shots and my butt is bruised, hard, and raised and not in a great work out way. Honestly I am in pain. Found out today that my level is low 3DPT so they increased dose to 1 and 1/2 cc's plus suppositories.
I am sitting with heat now, hoping this will not be an impossible task tomorrow night. It looks as if I have half a hard boiled egg under the skin.
Try to ice it really well before the shot, also, sometimes it helps to warm up the seringe between your hands, that is if you are doing oil, not water based.
Hope this helps,
Vlada

I got a prescription for EMLA cream from my MD for the IM shots. It really, really helps. My MD didn't believe it would be it does. It's a lidocaine cream that they use in pediatrics before needle sticks. You dab on a small (less than dime size amt) cover with occlusive dressing (I use a sandwich baggy to cover the cream & just tuck it into waist band of pants) then about 45 minutes later get your shot. You can't even feel the shot going in most of the time, which helps you relax, which helps the shot go in better.
Once you get a lump, a heating pad helps but it's just going to take a few days to go away. Unfortunately it sounds like you've got lumps on both sides.
Be sure whoever is giving your shot is holding the needle & syringe steady when they push down on the plunger. That helps alot too.
Hope it gets better,

thanks to all of you who sent me helpful info. I must have had some type of allergic reaction because i had other areas that had an allergic type breakout, lips itchy, eye swollen etc.
my DH who is a diabetic has been giving me shots and i think he mite need to figure out the PROPER way to give the muscular shots.
The dr prescribed allegra and told me to put a cortizone cream on it
he asked me to some in tomorrow for him to look at it. I am hoping they prescribe ENDOMETRIM i read some great things and no shots.
Anybody is getting fever after taking the PIO? I get fever and my nurse told me to take Tylenol. That helps. However, I am worried that I have been taking so many tylenols.
i only took the shot for 2 days because my embryos didn't make it to ET, but this is what I was told, and it seemed to work.. first of all, we were told to rub the bottle between our hands for a minute or two, then the person given the shot is supposed to stick it in w/ one motion. Afterwards, I was told to rub the area where the shot was given so it would pool around in the spot. then apply heat for about 10 minutes then walk around for a couple of minute. Repeat this for a hour for the first week. Now, since I didn't do the shot for more than 2 days, I don't know if this cuts down on the soreness. the nurse did say that it was going to be sore... Also, as one of the syptoms, you may feel warmer than usually (although from what I was told not a fever), but that you could take tylonel.
I second the Lidocaine...I had the SAME problem you had..BIG EGG bruises, black and blue, etc...(THANK YOU SECOND TIMER FOR TELLING ME ABOUT THE LIDOCAINE!!!)...but now I barely feel the needle go 30 - 40 minutes after putting the lidocaine on...(but once, recently, it burned again because I think my husband had the shot over an old "lump" under the skin. Hurt like hell.)
Get the lidocaine, and carefully choose the spot...also heating the oil bottle helps...be careful, if using a heating pad, not to put it on your stomach as the heat hurts your embryos...
I heard that icing it actually makes it more painful cuz it hardens the muscle...VLADA, is that true?
I think warming up the shot helps a lot too. I've started to keep the syringe under my arm for about 20 minutes or so. Definately DO NOT ice, warmth is what you want to go for.
Woodcliff, glad you found the lidocaine tip helpful. It really, really works but every now & then the shot hits a nerve & it hurts like hell. Not much way to avoid that since we can't see nerves under the skin.
I used to get really discouraged reading this forum with everyone who wasn't bothered at all by the shots. Then I realized that everyone feels pain differently, we all have slightly different amounts of nerves cells, & vastly different size hips. Now I just do whatever I can to make them tolerable.
With a little luck I'll be continuing mine for about 10 more weeks. I'll find out for sure this weekend!

I am so glad I read this post. I have been sitting for about a hour quivering over my first go with the injection and felt so scared. I now realise I am human!
My husband is hopeless with needles so it's up to me to do this and feel very alone. I've managed it at last but need to check with the clinic tomorrow that I got the amount right.
I just went through my 3rd IVF cycle and I discovered something that was an incredible help for the progesteren shots. the first 2 cycles I was bruised and lumpy...it hurt to sit down and trying to find a spot to inject myself after the 5th-6th night was really awful. So I tried using this little hand-held massager that I bought for my back and shoulders. After the injection, I'd massage the area very vigorously and deeply for a solid 5 minutes, sometimes 10! And I swear, it worked. No bruises, no lumps and the soreness disappeared within a day so it was easy to alternate sides. I was so excited that I told my coordinator at my doctor's office.
Please try it...I hope it helps you too.
FYI here's a link to the massager that I used, but I think you could probably use any battery operated hand-held massager.
