Question about IUI

Hi girls, I am an IVF girl, but my best friend is goign to have IUI or something like that soon, so I was wondering if you can help me out explain the procedure to her.

She has irregular periods, 1nce in 2.5 months, but she ovulates on her own. Anyways, here is a treatment that her doctor prescribed her:
gonal F 450IU ( 5 pens) and HCG shot. After that ether IUI or just regular sex intercouse.

Going thru IVF treatments and using gonal F for myself, I am a lil bit confused why does she need so much gonal F at all? What if she would develop 4, 5 6 follicles -potential eggs that would all fertilize?

I would greatly appreacite any input at all.

Malinka, I don't think I can answer your questions, but could you please explain the gonal f stuff to me? My dh and I will be seeing the fertility doc in a few weeks and I'm wanting be be a little educated. Thanks so much!

Steph, here is info about gonal F, it is a type of injectible to stimulate the growth of your follicles.

I am sure they will monitor her very closely. I went thru this last month and was on 450 of follistim for 10 days but only produced 3 follicles. If I had produced 8-10-12 follicles or something reasonable, we would have harvested and done ivf. (btw I was preparing myself for triplets and none of them took)
Is her RE starting her out on 450 per day? That seems like a high dose to start with ..unless she has a really high fsh. But he could have her on 225 a day (1/2 a pen). you don't have to use the whole pen in one usage.

no i think she was on 75 twice a day, it didnt' work out anyway... she has mild OOHS, so they didn't want her to overstimulate...
