8 mature only 1 fertilized! What are my chances?

Post by tricias2007 »

 I had Egg Retreival yesterday. We had 10 oocytes, 8 were mature and only 1 fertilized! I dont know why my fertilization is so low with 8 mature eggs. Dr. said they were trying to grow out the 2 immature today and if they grew do ICSI on them. So possible transfer on Saturday of the one embryo and maybe will have 2 more.

Anyone with a good story of 1 embryo working??

They say it only takes ONE. Keep positive. I have read a few stories on here with only one transfer and it turned out good. Keep relaxed as much as possible and best of luck to you.
hang in there. :D :D :D :D

Yes, it only takes one!

Here in the uk, at present you can only have 2 embryos implanted (3 if you are over 40) but they are trying to change it to only 1 embryo because of the increasing rates of twin births...which obviously comes with risks.

Good luck

Well ladies unfortunately I got a BFN on 8/29. We are following up with our RE on 9/14 to discuss the next step. Thanks for all your positive words. Here's hoping the third time is the charm!

Hi Tricia,

I just replied to you in another thread. According to my RE 'Bailout ICSI" as they call it rarely successful. You should just go ahead and do ICSI on ALL of your eggs next time. You might be producing eggs with a tough zona (outer shell) which could be why they arent fertilizing.

So sorry for the BFN. I just had one myself last month and it sure is a drag. Best of luck for a BFP next time around!

Hi Tricia,
I just got a got a BFP 7 days post 5 day transfer with only 1 embryo transferred. I had the same as you. 14 eggs retrieved, 10 fertilized via ICSI, 8 embryos developed. I had a 12 panel PGD and only 1 came back as healthy. That is what we transferred. Did you do PGD? It is helpful in determining more information in the health of the embryo.

Lind,
Thanks for the information. We actually did ICSI and still only had the 2 fertilize. So Im not sure if its that my eggs are bad or what but out of the 8 mature only the 2 feritlized.

We did not do PGD. Correct me if Im wrong but isnt that when they test the embryos to determine which ones are the best for implantation? I will talk to my RE about that at follow up. I think the only problem i may have with that is if i only have 2 embryos they probably wouldnt bother to test them because I dont have a choice. Please let me know if Im wrong about PGD.
Thanks
Tricia

Hi Tricias2007
Actually I had 8 embryos fertilize and continue development, and only one of those passed the PGD, so 7 developed embryos were not healthy. I guess if you wanted to go ahead and put in what ever you had and skip the expense of PGD then yes you could do that. I personally did not want to waste any more time at my age with unhealthy embryos that I unknowingly was putting back into me.
What part of the world do you live in?

Lind -
I live in NJ but go to the RE in NYC. I hear what you are saying about wasting time. Also the energy spent in that 2 week period waiting for a positive result. Telling yourself you're pg to stay positive and then get that call that you're not! Its completely exhausting and devestating.
