BFN for 1st time IVF

Post by jenni_k »

Well I got the dreaded news yesterday that I was a BFN. I pretty much figured as I started spotting on Sunday night. We have to sit down with the doctor now and talk about it and he said I can try again with the frozen embryos next month. He doesn't want to work off this period. Does anyone whose already been through this have any ideas of why they didn't implant? I'm worried that frozen won't yield any better results. By the way, anyone else have a period from hell after a failed IVF? Mine is terrible with awful cramps!!!

Thanks again for your support ladies! Good luck to all currently awaiting their results.

Jenni-- I am so sorry about your BFN. One of the books I have say to keep trying that sometimes it is just a numbers game. Since I haven't been through the first cycle yet, I can't help you on some of your questions. I just wanted to say I was sorry, and good luck next time.

Jenni,
There is really no explanation as why they have not implanted, i think it is just hit or miss game. I think that you should defifnitely try FET, I got BFN on my fresh cycle as well, i did FET this time and so far my HPTs have all been positive, i get a confirmation on Thursday. They say that sometimes FET is better because your body is not going through so much as it would in the fresh cycle.
I am confident that you will get your BFP!!!!
Good luck Jenni!!!!

Vlada,
Thanks fors giving me some hope. I'm so glad that everything is going so positive with yours. My sister struggled to conceive as well (male factor like me) and she said the same thing that her first time didn't take but the second did. She said it seems when you don't care as much is when it happens. I'm going to be less anxious the next time and just try to relax about it all.

On another note, how has everyone dealt with the time off from work? I used up all my vacation for the first IVF cycle and didn't tell my boss. This next time I will have to have the doctor write a note or fill out FMLA paperwork depending on how my employer wants to proceed. I really didn't want to fill them in on this but now I have no other option.

It did not work for us on our first Fresh cycle. It did work on our second frozen cycle. We think (as well as our Doc) it worked on the second time was because my wifes endometrium was overstimulated on the first attempt. With all the meds you take on the first attempt it's common that your endometrum (uterus lining) was overstimulated and implantation can't happen. After that our doc told us that he thought we had a really good shot on our second attempt because we were using no meds (except for progestrone/estrogen that helps the lining)....and he was right.

currently 11.5 weeks with twins

wish you the best of luck

I am joining you....just got our BFN today for our 1st IVF cycle. I am beyond devastated. Same situation..2 5 day great looking blasts, perfect lining...the whole thing makes me sick.

We have 2 frozen....I am not sure I can handle the mental strain of the whole let down again.

Hi Jenni,
Someone earlier mentioned about the trauma to the uterus being a factor in failed IVF. I've heard that many times as well. My RE has said that the success rate is higher with FET, and that this is probably the reason. It makes sense to me! I just had my first failed IVF and will begin FET later this month or early next month. I had horrible cramping from the injectibles and then the ER and ET. I wasn't surprised that the babies didn't stick. But I'm REALLY hoping my FET is BFP! Oh, and in agreement with you on the period as well. Worst one ever!!! I went home sick and sat with a hot water bottle on my stomach for three days!

why is FET better or eaise r than fresh? Is that because you are supplying your own eggs (fresh) and then within a few days have the IVF? What if you were getting fresh from a donor?

hi jenni

i agree with some of the other girls here that its just a numbers game. i'm 22 and the factor lies with my dh...we had 2 perfect grade A 8 cell embies put back and it was a BFN for me first time. i asked the clinic what went wrong and they said its like throwing a dice and getting a 6. some throw it once and get a 6 straight away, others might have to throw it more...we had a perfect cycle and it didnt work.

but second time round as you can see it worked. the cycle was not perfect by any means (the embies were 8 cell again) and i ended up with OHSS. so it just shows that sometimes its just a luck game. its still early days for me, i know, but just thought i would give you some hope.

take care

the other thing i forgot to mention is that the clinic gets to know your body and how it responds with the first one so its like a trial. that should mean they'll be able to tweak your next cycle to hopefully get a better result. i would also recommend having a follow up appointment.

anyway, take time out to be upset but every day will get easier.

Hey everyone!
Thanks for the support. I haven't checked in for a while because I just needed a break from all the baby stuff and needed time to enjoy the good stuff in my life instead of focusing on what I didn't have.

Anyway, I went back to see my doctor and he said one of the embryos did implant and that I was pregnant on my first blood draw although they wouldn't confirm anything either way to me that day. He said that was good news and that the embryo for whatever reason didn't survive. I felt a little more hopeful although it sucks to know you were so close!

Well my hubby and I are going to the FET next. My doctor let me choose whether I wanted to do the manipulated cycle working off of this period or wait and do the natural cycle and I can avoid the progesterone injections for 10 weeks. I choose the natural cycle so I have to wait until I get my period this month; if all goes well we should be looking at a tranfer sometime during the first week of Oct. Hopefully it works out for us.

Good luck to all still trying!

Vlada, congrats to you!!!
