Long protocol. Confused as to when we actually start

Post by a&p »

Hi. I've been told that i (we) will be on the long protocol. We've had our counciling session and last Wednesday we went for our pre treatment chat and to sign all the consent forms. We were not shown how to inject the needles but they needed to do the blood tests on us both again (HIV, Chromosone (??) etc) because the last time we had them done was over 12 months ago (They all came back fine last time so we're not worried about them).

I told her i was due on in the next 5 days and she told me to ring up on the first day of my period to arrange to go in for the day 21 blood work as the blood work we'd just had done would be back before then.

What i'm confused about is when we actually start with the injections. Would we actually get started with the injections on day 21 when i go to have the blood work or does something else need to happen after the day 21 blood work before we can actually get started?

My day to day flow chart says:

First day of period - Ring unit. Nurse will work out date of first appointment. Usual day 21 - 23 of your cycle.

Day 21 - 23 - Attend ward for 1st injection teach to start Buserelin daily.

Etc etc etc

I'm just worried that we won't actually get started with the injections on day 21 of this cycle as on day 21 -23 on the flow chart it doesn't say anything about any blood work.

Did they give u any Birth Control Pills? If yes, then the chances r that they will start.
And if everything goes well with ur reports, then you may start with Lupron shots from the 21st day of ur periods.

If not then they may recommend u the next cycle.

Hi, thanks for replying.

No, she didn't give me anything and there was no mention of birth control pills. Why would i need to take them when my periods are regular? All she said was that i'd be on 2 weeks of Buserelin, followed by 2 weeks (i think) of Menopur injections. Lots of scans and blood work etc

By the sounds of things it doesn't sound like we'll be starting on this cycle

Hi,

I was also on the long protocol when i did IVF. If I remember rightly they will teach you how to inject and then you will start down regging around day 21 (I think it depends ultimately on how long your cycle is). I don't remember having any scans while I was down regging but as soon as AF arrived I then started on the injections to stimulate the ovaries. Once they started then I had about 3/4 scans before ET.

It sounds to me like most clinics and you will start tmt this cycle. Where abouts are you having tmt? Most places in the Uk don't use B/C pills, think its more of something they do in the states. Please feel free to ask any questions, hope I've helped?

Hi Kate.

We're having treatment in Leigh at my local hospital (NHS). From what you have said it sounds like we could actually get started this cycle, 21 days as i started my period today. Never thought i'd be so happy to see my period :D

You've been a big help. Thanks very much :)

ALL THE VERY BEST FOR EVERYTHING. We are waiting to hear BFP from u soon!!
BCP are given to regulate the periods and different clinics adopt different protocols. Everytime I was on Long protocol and we had to undergo the same procedure. First they would start with Birth Control Pills and Folic Acid, follwoed by Lupron (usually 20mg) and Follitism and Menopur from the 2nd day of the AF.
