Timing of IUI

Post by Jane37 »

In July I had my IUI done 15 hours after HCG injection. It was unsuccessful. Was the timing too early?
How many hours after HCG injection have you had IUIs? What works?
Thanks

Hi Jane
My first iui was about 20 hours after HCG which I also thought was a bit early. I've looked into it and you should ovulate around 40 to 45 hours after HCG but as the egg only survives for 12 hours max it's important to have the sperm there waiting for it. Did you use fresh or frozen sperm? Fresh can survive for several days but there seems to be differing opinions about frozen. For my 2nd and 3rd attempts I was able to get afternoon appointments so it was more like 27 hours after HCG. Don't know if it made any difference though as they were all BFN.
Are you going straight into the next go or having a break?
Good luck

Hi Su,
I had my first IUI in July and had a break after because of all the irregular bleeding from progesterone. We used fresh sperm but I have read that it only survives for 18 hours after it has been washed so don't know if we allowed enough time.
Thanks for replying.
Good luck to you too,
Jane

My first IUI attempt was done about 20 hourse after the injection. I have also wondered if it was done too fast. Unfortunately they had to do the IUI on Sat. so i didnt have a say in the timing. Looks like im going to be in the same boat for this month, my ultrasound is on a friday. Did yours fall on a weekend too? I dont know what to think, I guess its really hard to predict time of ovulation and they dont want to wait too long. Let me know how your next one goes.

Hi Ladies

You can ovulate as little as 24-36 hrs after you surge naturally (effectively the same as having hcg) so its important to have the sperm read waiting for the egg. I read that studies have shown that the best time to have sex (if you were ttc'ing naturally - we wish!) is 2-3 days prior to ovulation! My clinic did intra cervical insem which means the sperm takes ?? about 18hrs or more to swim up to meet the egg so I used to have insem on day of surge.

I am now 35 weeks preg :D so keep up the pma ladies and all the best xxx

Lis,
Thanks for the success story. Those are really helpful. I know I'm crazy, but I really thought it was going to work the first time (or did we all kind of think that?).
Anyway, its nice to read about the happy things as well as the frustrations, I think it would be really easy to forget this site as soon as you get pregnant, it's so cool that you still visit and cheer others on, hopefully I'll be doing the same someday.

Hi mkdig
No, you're not crazy. I never expected it to work first time but was totally convinced it would 2nd time then came down to earth with a huge thud. It's good to hear of successs with later cycles.
keep up the pma :)

Yeah, we just had our first failed IUI. I guess we are preparing for number two! It can be so depressing. Esp hard when all your friends keep getting pregnant with no issues! Oh well, it helps to know there are others that understand. The doc said everything looked great and I just thought for sure that we were going to be successful! :(

Hi Ladies,

Thanks for all your replies.

Lis - congratulations on your pregnancy and for taking the time to visit us :D. I think my insem was done too early as the washed sperm may not have lived long enough :(. Don't know, guess we have to trust the experts.

Tina0, sorry to hear about your failed IUI. We know how you are feeling. Our doctor said everything looked great too and my acupuncturist was also confident - guess it just wasn't meant to be :(.

mkdig - my clinic is open every day and have said no problem if they have to do insem at the weekend, mine was in the week so don't think that was a factor. Sorry to hear your first wasn't successful. Here's to the second :D.

Bloodwork yesterday showed that my egg had grown too quickly and they have cancelled IUI for this month as they say that means the egg quality isn't good. So I have to wait again :?. They're going to do ultrasound early next month (day 7) so they can monitor things more closely. I want to avoid Clomid if I can - ovulation doesn't seem to be my problem (or at least I didn't think so :?). I posted on the general forum and was told that with a medicated cycle quick egg growth can be avoided so maybe we'll have to try that.

What a rollercoaster :)

TinaO-

I know exactly what you mean! my best friend told me she was pregnant during my 2weekwait from last iui and it was really hard. of course im happy for her, but it puts up such a huge wall. Its got to be all of turns eventually!! Is your next try going to be soon? I think ours will be on the 8th. Good Luck!

mkdig -

Well, I went to the lovely Fertility Center on Friday and had a sonogram and was told that I now have a cyst that formed I guess from the injectables I took during my IUI cycle. So, they put me on the pill for a month! It is frustrating to be on the pill when you are trying to get pregnant! :) Oh well, guess there is nothing I can do about it, but wait some more. If this next IUI fails, we are going to IVF. I don't think I can go through this forever - it is so hard!!

So, yours is on the 8th? Yeah for you! I will say a prayer for you and hope, hope, hope it works out for you. It just has to work for us, you know? Thankfully I am only 36, so I guess I have some time. My problem is that I don't ovulate on my own, but have lots of eggs - like 20 in each ovary. So, IUI's are kind of scary because they can spur too many along with the injectables. That is why I think IVF might be our answer. There aren't any issues with my husband. His swimmers are great. Looks like it is just my non-ovulations causing the problems. Who knows. I guess I was naive to think the first IUI would work. I don't want to get bitter, you know? It is just so hard when all my friends seem to have babies with no problems.

Oh well, I will be hoping your next one is a success!

Jane37 - Looks like you are in the same boat I am in with having to wait before you can try again. It stinks! Oh well, I guess it will be worth it if the next one works, right??

tina0 - sorry you've got to wait out this cycle, it must be really frustrating. I had a lot of delays at the start so I know how slowly time passes when you're just waiting like this.

Jane - sorry you got cancelled. I've never heard of the egg growing too fast. My problem is the opposite - they start growing then slow right down and stop or shrink again!

mkdig - good luck for 8th, let us know how you go

Last week was really hard for me. Started injections on Saturday and they made me feel really wierd. Had headaches and nausea and just felt generally off colour. Saw my homoeopath on Tues and came out feeling tearful (not sure if it was just cos she made me talk about things I'd been trying to ignore or if it was the hormones, prob both). I've continued to feel really emotional since then. Work's been really busy and stressful too then on Friday I found out a work friend is pregnant again - she only came back from mat leave about 2 months ago and is already 11 weeks pregnant! How come its so easy for some people!
On a positive note - I had a scan on Friday, day 8, and there was 1 follicle of 10mm and a few smaller ones coming up. I'm not usually this far along by day 10/11 so it looks like the injections are working. Going for another scan Monday.
Sooo hoping it works this time as I'm not sure how long I can stay on this rollercoaster.
Fingers crossed for BFPs for us all soon

TinaO-
Wow I know what you mean. I cant imagine going on the pill now. its got to be frustrating. Its hard to think about the drugs causing more problems, they are supposed to help, you know?
Maybe giving your body a little break and the pill will help get everything back to normal for the next try.
I know what you mean about thinking of trying ivf. we talk about it too, but of course are trying to avoid it, its soooo expensive, but I know we will if that is what we need to do.
We are kind of the opposite of you guys. So far everything seems ok with me (that seems to change for a lot of people though). My husband has azoospermia so we are trying iui with donor for now. if it doesnt work a few more times we will have to ivf/icsi.
I just know they are going to get it right for you guys. Maybe next time two of your eggs will ovulate and youll get beatiful twins!! keep the faith!!

Jane37-
the waiting must suck!!This is such a trial and error process. i guess we just have to hope that every cycle that isnt successful helps the doctors learn what to do differently the next cycle. It sounds like that is what is happening with you. I hope that the earlier ultrasounds make the differnce for you.If you do end up going on clomid its not so bad. i havent really had any negative side effects or anyting (im only on 50 mg though)

squeezan-
it does sound like a rough week! why is it everything seems to be crazy at one time? My job has been particularly rough during all of this. When it rains, it pours. Dont be hard on yourself for being emotional, some of these drugs are so powerful and Im sure all of our hormones are crazy out of whack!! Is this your first cycle with injectables? good luck on monday I hope your eggs are great!!!

Hi Ladies,

Tina0 - I know how you feel about waiting, it's not funny especially when I think it takes time to mentally prepare yourself for the next IUI. I was mentally prepared but then disappointed. Sorry to hear about the BCP, keep smiling :).

Squeezann - Hope this week is better than last. I hope that you have some good friends to support you through all this. It is tough. I have spoken to a few close friends about what we're going through but they can only listen as they have no idea how the experience feels. Glad the injections seem to be working.

Mkdig - good luck for the 8th. Not long now. Guess that this week you are having all the ultrasounds. Fingers crossed for you :).

I'm just waiting, we're going on holiday at the weekend. Just driving around so we're ready to come back for the next ultrasound.

Take care,

Jane

HCG shot

Post by stephjim »

I had my ultrasound on day 12 and he asked me to give myself the HCG shot the night of the 12th day and then the morning of the 13th day, they inseminated me. I am waiting. I have just over 10 more days to wait to take pregnancy test. This is my first IUI.
