How much is too much??

Post by Helen G »

Morning ladies

Had my 29 week appointment with the midwife yesterday - as unexciting as usual! She doesn't have much of a sense of humour and I always feel that she's just going through the motions as she's so busy. Moan, groan!

Anyway, shouldn't complain as everything looked fine. Wee and blood pressure both fine and she took a couple of pints of blood to test again for aneamia and glucose levels. I feel OK though.

The last couple of days the boys seem to have got a bit quieter (may be because we were away and quite busy) but she found their little heartbeats no problem so that's a relief!

Can I ask a bunch of ladies a question that you wouldn't normally ask?! The dreaded weight gain!! I've put on 13 kilos which I think works out at about 26 pounds (a couple of pounds short of 2 stone). Now I know that sounds scary but I didn't think it was too bad for 29 weeks with twins?! What do you guys think? I don't feel like I've piled on weight - I feel that most of it is upfront (on my belly not my boobs unfortunately!). The midwife, however, implied that I'd put on loads and she would have expected me to have put on that much by the end of the pregnancy and not at this stage. Needless to say I feel like a complete lardy now!

Does it sound excessive to you (and don't just be nice!). Are you guys doing the same?

LOL Helenxx
29 wks today!

Hi Helen!

Glad to hear that the boys are doing OK.

I think that sounds like a silly comment from the midwife. I know several people who've put on about 4 stone with a singleton pregnancy. I put on just less than 2 stone but quite a bit of that went on by 30 weeks and I actually lost weight in the last couple of weeks. I was told that I'd had a very small weight gain for a twin pregnancy so your weight gain sounds fine to me.

Jules

Hi Helen,

I'm not sure what's normal and what's not - but some of my friends put on 2 and a half to 3 stone - all with singletons, so I wouldn't worry to much. I'm sure it all depends on your figure to start with (how realistic are these pregnant models in the papers??). I'm 20 weeks and I've probably put on about a stone and a half (it's difficult to say exactly since I put on a lot of weight during the IVF cycle).

I'm sure if you breast feed it will all come off afterwards anyway (that's what I'm hoping!!).

Alison xx

Hi There

I don't think that was fair of the midwife to say that to be honest because at the end of the day everyone is different. I am having one baby and I will be 20 weeks on Thursday and I couldn't believe it when I got on the scales it says I have put a stone on already. The thing is I wouldn't worry if you feel ok in yourself then thats all that matters.

Love
Shell.
xx

Hi Helen,
I haven't weighed myself for a while (on purpose as I know That I have put on a lot over the last 6 weeks or so!!)
Your midwife sounds horrible and I don't take any notice of horrible people!!
2 stone sounds nothing, especially for a twin pregnancy. Like the others, I know people who put on 3-4 stone for a singleton pregnancy!!
At the end of the day as long as you are eating healthily I wouldn't worry.
Have you been weighed at your appointments at all? I haven't been weighed once. I have my bump measured instead I think.

Anyway hope this makes you feel better,
Lots of love
Kirsty
xxxx
Helen

I think your midwife is talking a load of old cobblers. I'm 35 weeks pregnant with one baby and have gained about 2 stone. I'm all of 5ft 1 and 3/4 (it all counts) and normally weigh between 7 to 7 1/2 stone. I don't feel like a lardy by any stretch of the imagination, and don't feel as though my bump is particulary big either.

Like Kirsty said they dont generally weigh you anymore, for precisely this reason. They measure to assess the size of the baby/babies, because lets face it we're all so different that there could never be a weight gain that they could consider average. I was weighed at my first appointment and that was it.

Take no notice of her and just get on and enjoy the rest of your
pregnancy.

Suzanne.x

Hi Helen

Nice midwife you've got there (not!).

There's no hope for me then - I've put on 4 stone now (33 wks). My midwives haven't even weighed me since booking in appointment so it's obviously not that important as long as babies are growing ok. In USA, if you're expecting multiples, they tell you to eat high calorie stuff and to put on as much weight as possible to 'fatten up' the babies. I saw a woman on discovery health having quads and she put on 9 stone (they said that was great and all 4 babies were 3-4 lbs).

So anyway, get eating while you don't have to worry about the weight and tell your midwife to have a bar of chocolate herself.

Glad your twins are ok.

Luv Rachel X

Helen,

If it makes you feel better I had put on about 4 stone by week 28...a lot of it was pure fluid, and three weeks after they were born I weighed myself and was only half a stone heavier than pre-pg. The only reason they weigh you is to check you don't put on a huge amount quickly which is a sign of fluid build up (odema)

And to make you feel even better...with no diet I have since lost over 4 stone and am back to my Wedding weight....its the twin diet ...slow but steady as I seemed to lose a pound a week without trying.

Ignore that miserable cow...just enjoy the miracle of being a twin mummy to be!!!

Good Luck
Nicky
