Ok so I am new at this and was wondering what some of you might think.
I was 25 and dumb and decided that I wanted my tubes tied when I had my second child. I had my first child at 21 and second when I was 25 due to immaturity and not taking my pills like I should. Never the less I was still happy and love my children dearly. At that time in my life we (my husband and I) decided we didnt need any more children and knew I would be having a csection so we would go ahead and have a tubal done. Well the Doc discouraged it and said I would regret but still thinking I knew more than him I wanted it done. Now here I am 5 years later dying to have another baby!!! I have set up an appointment with him to discuss my options. The funny part is the only appointment they had was on the 18th which is my daughters birthday. ha So exactly 5 years later I am going to see what I can do. I just dont know whether I should try In vitro or try and get the tubes reversed. Just wondering what some thoughts were from other women that might have had the same decision to make. Any advice will be appreciated!!!
I can definitely chime in on your situation. I had my tubes tied when I was 30, after my second child and second divorce which I didn't want, and not wanting to let another man take advantage of me by wanting a baby and then realizing he can't handle it!! so needless to say, I just knew I didn't want any more children after that....well, 4 years later, I met my now husband and he has no children. We have been together for 6 years and 3 years ago, I had a tubal reversal. We thought that because we wanted more than one child, that would be better than IVF and more cost effective. IVF is expensive and our insurance does not cover it. Well, not anticipating there would be any issues with the reversal, we went for it. Come to find out, my right tube closed almost immediately so we decided a year later to have a second surgery to have the right tube opened up again hoping it wouldn't close again since my right over is dominate and I 99.99999% ovulate from my right side. So we spent more money and had the second surgery. Again, 3 months later, I had another HSG test and it confirmed my right tube closed again. So now we had spent $15,000 (ins. does not cover the reversal either) and have not had a BFP. Due to my age, 39 next month, we decided on IVF treatment. I had 5 embies transferred on 9/4 and will find out the results of that on 9/14. I do know many women who have had a tubal reversal and have gone on to have 2-3 babies, but there is always the chance that the tubes will close and there is no way of knowing that unless you have the surgery. Also, even when they do successfully repair the tubes, there is more to it than that. There are other functions inside the tube that the doctor cannot repair that aide in the moving of the egg down the tube. They think that is what is wrong with my left tube. While it is still open, the doctor feels like it is damaged inside and not transporting the egg properly when the 2 times in 3 years I have ovulated on my left side.
I think you should do some research on tubal reversal, consider all factors, meet with a RE and go from there. IVF at 35-36 is much different than IVF at nearly 40.....unfortunately, we can't get those 3 years back. Hope this helps!! Good luck with your decision!!!

Wow odd that you post this, -- this is one thing we too are going to discuss with our NEW RE, tubal repair vs IVF, we are open for either, but we are going to get info on repairing my one and only tube, was born with only one as well as one ovary, and half of a uterus, but gave birth to two children full term, weighing over 8.5 lbs over 19 inches long, so it all worked at one time, huh?
Please keep me posted as to what you find out, my appt is next Thursday.
Just from the things I have read on message boards and other things online I am really leaning toward the IVF. But who knows maybe I will change my mind after talking to the Dr on Tuesday. I did find this site about IVF vs Tubal reversal http://www.advancedfertility.com/tubalreversal.htm
you might find it interesting. I will definitly keep you posted as to what my doctor says on Tuesday.

Thanks Mary,
I too will discuss it and see what the chance are, might even go for it, then if for some reason that did not work I will ask if my next option could be IFV.
I had my tubes tied in 1997--then in 2001 i attempted a reversal in order for us to have another baby. THe doctor was only able to reattach one tube as the other tube was just to damaged to repair. He gave us good odds of getting pg on our own--sadly we found out 2 years later then my tube had closed back up. So we were faced with yet another decision another reversal which we had to private pay or ivf which we also have to private pay. Well we choose ivf--took us a few years to save up some of the money for it but i am happy to say we have a beautiful 4 month old baby boy thanks to ivf.
If you are young and had no problems getting pg the first times i guess i would suggest a reversal as they are usually cheaper then IVF and give you more chances at having more babies. I am on another message board and their are i think about 25 of us laides on there that have had reversals and there is only a handful that haven''t been successful.
Do your research and talk with yoru doctor--it is important to find a good, experienced reversal doctor to get the best results.. Bridget
