Hello Lacy,
Awwwww poor thing, I know this must be such a disappointment to be told that everything is not going by the book! But you must understand that an ovarian cyst is basically a follie that's growing too fast... and without an egg in it. That's it.
Jackie is right; in some cases, the cyst, like a follie, will "absorb" the hormones (even in a natural cycle) and in an IVF cycle, will slow down the growth of your other follies.
You're talking to a cyst "specialist" here; I've had ovarian cysts on natural cycles since I was 13, lol! I did IVF twice so far, and both times I had cysts on EACH ovary. Usually around 5 cms in size. They didn't cancel my cycles and they simply waited until ER to puncture them. And by the way, they retrieved 14 and 21 follies respectively, so...
I won't lie to you, though. Puncturing a cyst makes you bleed a little inside. Yes, it hurts during the procedure. You won't scream, but you'll be uncomfortable. And it's likely that, like after "normal" ER, you'll feel pain for about 2-3 days after because the small bleeding irritates the peritoneum (the "bag" in which your abdominal internal organs are). Two extra strength Tylenol every 4 hours, taken religiously, will help a great deal. I was able to go to work and I did fine. Walked a little slower, but I was fine. The important thing here is to manage your Tylenol intake so you never let the pain rise too much (never beyond 3 on a scale of 10) because if you wait too long, the pain meds aren't as effective.
Sorry about that big "pain control" speech. It's not because the pain is so terrible; I'm just telling you all this so you stay as comfy as possible.
So don't worry; a cyst is no big deal especially if your follies are growing nicely. And your Dr doesn't seem concerned, so it must be the case. I'm sure everything will be just fine!
Good luck with your cycle!
Sophie
