anyone ever had a cyst?? help

Post by lace7725 »

Hi there .. I went for my baseline ultrasound this morning and i found out I have a small cyst in one of my ovaries. My RE has me coming in tomorrow to aspirate it ... then she is VERY hopeful that I can continue on my IVF cycle as planned. Has anyone had this happen? Is this procedure very painful? I am so upset and nervous about this. I was so hoping for an "All Clear!"

Thank you
Lacy

HI Lacy,

I have had a cyst before and they come and go with each cycle. The reason that they are concerned is because the stimms will go directly to the cyst and not the follies and you wont have a good response.

Aspiration is like a retreival. I never had one because they made me wait until the next month to see if it went away and it did.

Good luck to you!!

Hello Lacy,

Awwwww poor thing, I know this must be such a disappointment to be told that everything is not going by the book! But you must understand that an ovarian cyst is basically a follie that's growing too fast... and without an egg in it. That's it.

Jackie is right; in some cases, the cyst, like a follie, will "absorb" the hormones (even in a natural cycle) and in an IVF cycle, will slow down the growth of your other follies.

You're talking to a cyst "specialist" here; I've had ovarian cysts on natural cycles since I was 13, lol! I did IVF twice so far, and both times I had cysts on EACH ovary. Usually around 5 cms in size. They didn't cancel my cycles and they simply waited until ER to puncture them. And by the way, they retrieved 14 and 21 follies respectively, so...

I won't lie to you, though. Puncturing a cyst makes you bleed a little inside. Yes, it hurts during the procedure. You won't scream, but you'll be uncomfortable. And it's likely that, like after "normal" ER, you'll feel pain for about 2-3 days after because the small bleeding irritates the peritoneum (the "bag" in which your abdominal internal organs are). Two extra strength Tylenol every 4 hours, taken religiously, will help a great deal. I was able to go to work and I did fine. Walked a little slower, but I was fine. The important thing here is to manage your Tylenol intake so you never let the pain rise too much (never beyond 3 on a scale of 10) because if you wait too long, the pain meds aren't as effective.

Sorry about that big "pain control" speech. It's not because the pain is so terrible; I'm just telling you all this so you stay as comfy as possible.

So don't worry; a cyst is no big deal especially if your follies are growing nicely. And your Dr doesn't seem concerned, so it must be the case. I'm sure everything will be just fine! :)

Good luck with your cycle!

Hi Lacy

Don't know if it will help but here is my experience

I had a cyst during a cycle. I was worried that it may delay tmt, but this is quite common. I had it aspirated. I was given a mild sedative and felt nothing. I felt a little woozy until the sedative wore off but other than that was fine.

When I felt better (an hour or so later) we were taken to see the nurse and she showed us how to do our injections and the cycle carried on.

The whole thing was totally painless and didn't effect the rest of the IVF cycle.

Good luck

I had a cycle cancelled due to cysts, they aspirated (uncomfortable) but unfortunately still had to cancel my cycle and seemed devastating at the time. I have heard mixed results from completing a cycle with a cyst, sometimes...in my case, it was better to have canceled and start again with a clear path, so to speak, we ultimately got a positive result which ended in MC but a positive result none the less. After aspiration I took the day off and I'm glad I did, not only from the discomfort but from the emotional rollercoaster that we were on.

This might not be what you wanted to hear but it's what happen in my case. We are preg now (naturally while waiting for next cycle) but that's 7 years later and many ups and downs. Ultimately you must believe you will be a mommy to a beautiful child!
