I have read positive expereinces about taking Dhea to improve the number of eggs stimulated during IVF. I have also read that there are some cons to doing this. Woudl anyone have any additional information other than the one study (Barad & Gleicher) which was done last year with a small number of subjects which reported positive results.

Ironic you bring this up---I was just researching it the other night due to my only 3 follicles & 3 bad eggs after high dose stims for IVF on 9/12. I have this on my list of items to review with my doctor on 10/4.
DHEA is a mild male hormone used for POF (premature ovarian failure). I've read good and bad on it. No long term studies avail, which is why not all doct's are "buying into it".
You may have alredy been on this one. Google search "DHEA and infertility"...lots of into but nothing FOR SURE. That's the scary part.
One of the websites I was on the other night said that women under 40 and who still want to bear children should not take it. Lots of quality eggs, but at what risk to the baby is my concern. Can not locate that stie now.
Let me know what you find out.
Txs-Julie

Thanks Julie,
I am sorry that your IVF attempt in September failed. Mine did too and I also only had 3 eggs! They never fertilized, but I am trying again next month. I am not sure why you were told that DE is your only option. I have a friend who has just done three IVF cycles in quick sucession. She too is a poor repsonder like us and she is now 42 years old. Each cycle they tried different protocols and this last one they tried only FSH (no other suppression drugs or anything) which had her produce 9 eggs, 4 of which fertilized and they are transfering. So I just wanted to mention, since you wrote in your signature that you only have DE as an option, that whilst that may be a good option at any point, if you would rather not give up on your eggs just yet - you really don't have to. uurggh poor grammar but too late for me to rephrase - exhausted tonight. Good luck and thanks so much for the links!!!

I'm mtg with my doct 10/4 to review my case, and will be going to another doct for 2nd opinion. Have a list of questions for them both.
So, when you say they did ONLY FSH the last time on your freind...do you mean she ONLY took follistin (or correlating brand) and NO menopur??
Do you know what her FSH levels were (from B/W)??
Money is our other factor and it pisses me off that if this was a dick problem (thats right, I said it) insurance would cover it. Companies say they are familly oriented, but really---most are not.
We are going to save $$ and do soemthing in ealry 2008.
Good luck to you next month...I will be curious how you come along.
So, what shots will they have you on???
Fingers crossed for you!!!
Love-Julie

Hi Belly4#2 & Julie-
After my 2nd failed IVF in July, my doctor put me on 25mg of DHEA. He said my eggs are of good quality, but that my estrogen level was very low in relation to my good progesterone level at the time of my Beta - and thinks that the poor estrogen levels led in part to the embryos (2 Blasts) not implanting -- He is also testing my absorption levels of B vitamins and other minerals to work to correct the problem.
I'm still in the testing stage, so I can't say if taking DHEA is having an impact or not at this point. But, I ought to know soon and can let you know. In the 2 months I've been on it, I haven't had any negative side effects - only a good mood, which has been great.
I'm pretty certain that at least one woman on the general forum, over 40 crowd thread was taking DHEA and just got her BFP. I can't say if the 2 things are related, just fyi --
Wishing you lots of luck!
xx Amy

Txs for the feedback. Hope all goes well for you....and yes, keep us ppsted.
So, when do you think you will be at the ER stage? Sounds like your doct is doing all he/she can to ensure success! That's good.
