Low birth rate?

Post by Katy91 »

Hi - I'm 31 weeks along with a boy. All has been going well so far. I saw the doctor today and he said he will want me to have another ultrasound, because IVF babies are often low birth weight babies. I'd never heard this. He measured my bump too and said it's "average" - which is fine with me. But now, of course, I'm worried about the birth weight thing. Anyone else heard this? what does it really mean?

Katy91 - I have a beautiful DD born Dec 7th 2005 from my first IVF try. She was born at 40wks 5 days and weighed 7lbs 11oz and measured 20inches. She has grown consistently well and is very healthy. Your baby boy should be a good size at 31 weeks. Plus they tend to gain about 1lb a week the last month or so of your pregnancy. Best of luck to you!

I don't put too much stock in those types of studies for the following reasons:

1 - Look at the varied situations that brought us all to IVF. These factors alone play a huge role in the size of the baby; age, dna, stress, etc.

2 - Most of these studies are for a brief amount of time in varied parts of the world. It is almost impossible to do one that encompasses all aspects of IVF and can clearly determine this to be a fact.

I honestly wouldn't worry. I would eat a few extra milkshakes and call it good. Those ultrasounds are also not that predictable. I was told that I was going to have a 6 - 6.5lb'er and low and behold I birthed an 8 lb baby. Take it all with a grain of salt and tell him to stuff his opinions in a sack.

Disclaimer - I do have a bachelors in Sociology with an emphasis in studies so I am a bit pessimistic as I see all the loop holes in them...

Thank you everybody for your replies - it all really helps a lot. My ob practice is very good, and I really like the doctors. But while I know they see IVF moms, they are very cautious about the whole thing. All this time I'd been feeling like "I'm just pregnant like everyone else!"

On the other hand, I could probably stand to eat more during the day. My job is really demanding and in the 3rd trimester my appetite hasn't been what it was. So this was probably a good wake up call anyway...
