Day 3 or Day 5

Post by nerms »

Hi ladies (and gents) Sorry to bother you with another question...today we got a call from the clinic telling us that of nine embryos 5 were doing quite well, 2 at 6 cell stage, 1 @7 cell 1@ 8 cell and 1 nine cell...does anyone know much about nine cell embryo?? After a discussion we decided to wait till day 5 and see which develop into blastocysts...have we made the right decision??? The dillema was that we don't match the strict criteris which is two at 8 cell stage, but then there is enough to take a chance. I feel (gut feeling) that maybe we have made the right decision. We were told that it makes no difference to the development if the embryo is in me or in a petri dish so waiting to day five seems to make sense as we can see which develop more strongly and put those two back in...does anyone have any thoughts, comments or stories of their own?

Thanks

Nerms-

We did 5 day transfer and I have read that blasts have a better chance at implanting because they are further along. Blasts usually have divided over 100 times by day 5. We had 9 eggs fertilize and so the embrologists decided to do the tranfer on day 5 to get the BEST two to put back in. Sadly, the day of transfer we only had 2 left as all others had stopped growing. The RE told us that doing day 5 transfer really made a difference for us because they could have chosen the wrong 2 embroyo's to transfer on day 3. However the decsion on day 3 vs day 5 was made by the clinic, I think they decide based on the number of fertilized eggs you have. Sadly I didn't have any to freeze.

Good luck to you!

Our clinic does 3 day transfers. In their research they have seen that the sooner they get those embyroes back into their natural environment the better rate of pgy. However, i have learned wiht ivf that each doc and each clinic has their own opinions and ideas. We transferred two day 3 embies and ended up pg with twins--sadly we lost one but have a beatiful baby boy that is 4.5 months. Good luck adn wishing you are bfp. bridget

Hello everybody!! My clinic bases ET almost entirely on HOW MANY FOLLIES they retrieve.........if 5 or less, they do 3 day transfer......if more - its 5 day........if it REALLY doesn't matter if in petrie dish or in mommy ----- i don't know why ALL clinics wouldnt' just wait and do a 5 day transfer??????? Just thinking out loud.......makes me curious - that's for sure..........cuz if that's the case, then it makes it seem as though they are in it only for the money  cuz i had a 3 day....(bfn).....and if they could have KNOWN by day 5 that it wasn't going to work had they left them in petrie dish ---- that would have been MUCH less stressful than going thru the whole 2ww and the bundle of emotions that came with!!!

now ya got me thinkin!!!!!

Hi thanks for the responses....Kelly I hope we get the same result as you :D :D The embryologist said basically the same thing...that they are waiting to see which embryos show themselves up as the strongest and then replace those for the exact same reason.

I must say the same thought crosses my mind as it did your's Angie...why would all clinics not just wait till day 5 if there is no difference between replacing the embryo or leaving them in a petri dish...I guess maybe they just want to give ladies hope too, and also this is the "belief" of the clinic I go to, like all things in medicine things are not always black and white and there is nearly always a difference of opinion! I hope and pray we have made the right decision...going on my gut feeling I feel that we have made the right decision.

Good to you all and lots of sticky baby dust your way!
