HELP! +ive hpt fading!!!

Post by mulligan »

Hi,

I had a frozen embryo transfer last Thursday. I poas on Tuesday and got a VERY faint +ive. I did a million hpt between Tuesday and Friday and got a VERY faint line every time. It never got darker at all. I even did a HPT certainty digital test and it said "pregnant". I was so excited. Then, 24 hours later, all the hpt tests that I've done are all -ive. No line at all. My boobs hurt (which I know can be because of pio shots), but I don't really feel anything else. What's the deal with the negative tests after literally 15 faint, but positive tests??!! Is this a chemical pregnancy? Is the HCG leaving my body if the tests are now definitely negative? Has this ever happened any of you?

My beta is Tuesday. I don't think I can't wait any longer!!

Sorry- I meant that new tests are now showing a negative result when a few days ago, the tests I were taking were all faintly positive.

You're sweet though, and thank you for your words of encouragement.

I'm just wondering if anyone has ever gotten a few +ive tests and then a few days later were getting bfn with another test. If anyone knows anything about this, please help me and please be honest.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I have another digital test left, but I don't know if I can bear seeing "not pregnant" after seeing "pregnant" on Friday so I haven't done it. I think I might do it tomorrow morning if I get up the courage. I don't know what to think...

Mulligan,
I just read your post & debated on whether I should respond or not. I don't want to take away your hope. But the scenario was very similar to what I just went through so I thought I would tell you about it. Remember, just because this happened to me does not mean it will happen to you. I had a FET in August. At 10 days after the transfer I took a HPT & got a faint + line . Two days later I took another one, but the line was maybe a little fainter than before. The faint + on the 2nd test really bummed me out because I was hoping for a darker line. Then 2 days after that I tested again & got a negative. My beta was the next day & it was 2. I think one of my embies tried to attach but just didn't make it very long at all. Because it was a FET any HCG in my system must have been produced by a chemical pregnancy.
I hope, hope, hope that this does not happen to you. I hope that the neg HPT was just taken at the wrong time of day or your urine was too diluted. Please let us know how it works out. I'm really hoping to hear good news. Stay positive until the beta.

2ndtimer-

Thank you so much for your post. I think that is exactly what is happening to me. That's the only scenario that makes sense. What a mean, evil little trick to be played on us. There is nothing like getting a +ive on a hpt, but to then have it taken away so abruptly is just painful. I'm sorry that you've been through this too. I hope that since then you've had some success. What happened after your chemical pregnancy? Did you just stop all shots and then get your period? Did you have to wait long before trying again? Sorry for all the questions, I just don't know where we go from here. Thanks again for your post, it made me feel better to know that this has happened to someone else and that I am not alone.

Well, after the BFN I stopped all meds & it took about a week to get AF. Then we had our follow up appt with MD & got the plan for the next IVF cycle which I was hoping to start this month. The MD thinks that I was too shut down by the Lupron which made them have to increase my dose of follistim very high. I ended up making about 20 follicles but he suggested that maybe the high dose of Follistim caused my uterus to be irritable. So this next cycle I'm going to be on BCP's for 10 days, then get AF, then move right onto the follostim with a microdose of lupron. And we will let the embies go to day 5 blast before transfer. I was happy with the plan THEN I went in for a saline U/S(probably for the 10th time -all previously normal) & the MD saw a potential problem with my tubes. He said that they looked like they were filling up with fluid. So I have to have a Hysterosalpingogram(my 3rd -first 2 were fine) and if my tubes are still blocked they want to do lap surgery to remove them!!!!
So I've been having a bad time since Aug 31 when I got my BFN. It seems like such an uphill struggle. I really don't want surgery. Anyway, sorry to be such a downer. I still think you should hold out a little hope until the beta.
And I will NEVER ever take another HPT, it's just too emotionally hard.
Best of luck to you,

2ndtimer--
Sorry to hear about all your troubles  It's soo frustrating.

I wanted to let you know that before I started any of the infertility treatments, I did go in for one of those saline things to see if my tubes were open or not. Found out that my left one was blocked. didn't do anything about it right away. Was told that it could have been caused by a number of different things like a previous infection, etc. but really couldn't tell me why it was blocked. Did 3 IUI's which didn't work (but if most of the mature eggs were on the left side, it wouldn't have worked anyway. Can't remember if I had more on the left or right at the time). Probably explained why I had such a hard time getting pregnant also.

Then we were told that I should do the lap. surgery. It was recommended that I do one IVF first to see if it worked and then if it didn't to have the surg. because I would have 5 more IVF cycles to try. Ended up only intially getting approved for 3 so we decided to do the lap. surgery first, since there were no guarantees I would get more than 3... It was done the day before Thanksgiving last year. They ended up telling me I had endometroisis (never had the symptoms of it) and they removed the tube. It was sore for a little while, but I just took it easy. I still have had 3 failed IVF, but I think my problem has to do w/ my ovarian reserve and the lack of response to the stims. They did want to switch one of the IVF to IUI, and I was a little concerned since I only had 3 mature eggs, but I think that one of them was on the left side, so it would have been a "wasted egg" since nothing could make its way up on the left side. But I still try IVF because it may still work.

It's hard NOT to do a HPT. However, when I've had E/T, I really try to refrain from doing it. I've been told and heard that they really can give you a false positive b/c of the hormones, I usually don't want to raise my hopes up if in the end it's a false positive... My issue is that I usually got AF about 2 or 3 days before the PT. Not spotting, but a full blown period, heavier than usual. So that was always my own natural pregnancy test.

I know that it's so hard to stay optomistic--it's like going to hell and back, but I will keep my fingers crossed that this next test shows that your tubes are open and that everything will be fine.

Thanks KBat,
I'm not really feeling quite as pessimistic as the above post sounds. At least not most of the time. It really threw me for a loop, 1st the positive turning negative, then the news about the blocked tubes. I'm actually starting to do a little better now, especially since our weather is turning cooler & I'm able to spend more time outdoors. Exercise & fresh air does wonders for my mental health!
I would never use a HPT during a fresh IVF cycle for just the reason you gave -the HCG trigger shot can give a false positive. During a FET, you don't get the HCG so any in your system you produced as a result of the embie inplanting.
I am also hoping that the HSG shows clear tubes. I'm a little doubtful though because I've had strange mild cramping around my tubes since the saline U/S. I never had that before. But, I'm resigned that if I need the surgery then JUST DO IT! I just want to move on to the next IVF & get pregnant.
It sounds like your insurance is covering the IVF. Your very lucky in that regard. Hopefully we'll all get lucky with BFP's one of these days too.

Yes, my insurance does cover it. I am glad that you are feeling better about things. Sometimes time can help. If you have to do the surgery and you want to ask me any questions, please feel free to ask me anything about it. I am hoping that in the end it's something that you don't have to do, but I've been through the lap. surg. and I've had one tube removed, so ask away if you need to. Also, that's good to know about the FET. I've never had the FET--never had enough eggs to get that far....

Glad to hear that you are feeling a little better. I will be keeping my fingers crossed for you that all goes well and that you can start your next IVF soon!!

Hi,

Just wanted to let you all know that it was a chemical pregnancy. My beta today was a 1.52. Not good. This time is much harder considering that 2 days ago I was so happy with a "pregnant" on a digital test. Just goes to show that we are never in control and that you just never know what's going to happen next. Now, I wait for af and get on with the next try. Good luck to you all and maybe I'll see you on the boards with bfps!!

Mulligan,

I am so sorry. I can completely understand what you are going through as I've now had 3 chemicals. I used to get so excited at a positive on the hpts but now I don't even do them as it doesn't seem to mean that the positive will stay.

It is a cruel joke to be pregnant and have that taken away so quickly.

Hang in there. It sounds like you have a positive attitude to look forward to the next attempt. That is what I keep doing - as soon as i have a plan for the next round I always feel so much better.

Hang in there!

Kellym-

Thank you for your post. You're right having a plan is key- I always feel better when I have a plan too. I called my dr. today to make a follow up appt. so we can get started with Plan B (or C, or D, or E!) and they didn't even have the courtesy to call me back. I even called twice. Today of all days I needed them to call me back so that I at least had an appt. to talk about the next step.

I'm sorry that you've been through this so many times before. It just doesn't make any sense. It's an awful feeling to be so close and then nothing. It's just not fair.

Just out of curiousity, did they change your protocol for the next go round after your chemicals? I've had one failed fresh ivf and now one failed fet, I'm ready to change things up a little bit for the second fet. It seems to be that the way we are doing things is not working! Have you had any luck since your last try?

Hope that you are doing well with whatever stage you are in and thanks again for your post. This forum really does help.

Take care,
Mulligan

Mulligan,
I'm also very sorry to hear about the negative. I'm not sure if each time it gets easier or harder. For me I guess it just depends on what time a day it is.
I hope your next cycle is both soon & successful. Just be sure to take the time you need for recovery, physically & mentally. I know for me I usually start feeling a little better after AF, I guess my hormones start to regulate then. It's about time for some good news for you, me, Kbat, KellyM & the others!
Hang in there & keep us posted,
