ICSI cases

Post by gori »

Hello All
I have been going through infertility treatments due to low sperm counts of my hubby. It's been more than 3 years and we have tried everything, like IUI [8-10 times], IVF [3 times], once I did get pregnant thru IVF but had a miscarriage in 4 month. I am 35 now and need to decide one way or the other. From the beginning my doctor has been advising ICSI but we have been hesitant due to mixed information available on this treatment. Some doctors feel it's perfectly fine and others pose some concerns. I have read a lot about it on the internet too. I am mainly concerned about the development/growth of the baby. I would really appreciate it if someone could share their experiences on ICSI. If you had a child/children through ICSI, pls share your practical knowledge and experience of how the growth and development of your child is. I would really.............really............really appreciate if you could share this real life experience.
Thank-you so.............much in advance!!

My first (and only) IVF was successful and was also done with ICSI due to my husband having what they call "slow swimmers" and he had a low count as well. My twin boys are perfectly healthy. No problems at all w/ my pregnancy. I did have them 7 weeks early, but that was not a factor due to ICSI.

Hi
I had to do ICSI because my DH had a vasectomy. It worked...I am pregnant with twins from IVF/ICSI and according to the million u/s they are doing everything is looking good as far as growth goes. I am so excited to meet the babies and things are looking good for the future in this department. I would try it-you never know what will happen...good luck.

What brilliant, wonderful stories.

I have just started ICSI, and just wanted to say that I researched it pretty thoroughly, and in the end felt satisfied that the majority of studies showed no difference in a child's developement whether they were born through ICSI or through regular IVF. One study that did show a higher incidence of disability in ICSI children had an extremely broad definition of "disability" - they counted minor problems like club foot that can be corrected in early childhood.

There is, of course, the potential that the factor (unknown in our case) that makes the father infertile could be passed on to a son. Personally, I think that if medical science can help my husband and I get pregnant now, it's going to be able to help our son - if we have one - get pregnant in 25 years time.

I say go for it.

By the way, I'm Australian and the ICSI studies I'm referring to are Australian studies.

Hi!
We have what you call unexplained infertility and in fact I am very healty based on numerous tests every year! Only thing taking time which is a big factor I guess, is DH sperms slow motility.....I did IUI and nothing so my doc recommended we do ICSI to save time and money, inspite of healthy everything...Now I am 6 weeks pregnant!! I have read on ICSI and in the end doctors from all over came to one conclusion that IVF in general, any procedure not natural, has its ???? But the good news is that most babies born are perfectly normal. Its just like embryos attaching, no one can really tell the factors to make it work 100% and yet theres hope if we try!...this is my 3rd IVF for example and finally something I did or didnt do made them stick...In short if ICSI gives you the chance to successfully conceive children I think this blessing itself is a sign that we should NOT loose faith...and like what the others have written here, medical advances are getting better and the percentage of birth deffects is low and not proven to be 100% accurate...So in the end its just a matter of choice, if you have a higher chance of conceiving with ICSI and you were already open to doing IUI or other assisted methods, then ICSI is just like getting a better and different dosage of meds to make things work this time...and then we TRUST in God from then on :D

PS. Its a fact that every cycle is different thats why many try 7 even 10 times and finally give birth to healty babies...maybe ICSI is your answer??? My firend gave birth to healthy TWINS last year using ICSI and another just gave birth and got pg with ICSI..hope this helps!

Hi

We had half IVF, half ICSI and none of our IVF fertilized, so if it wasnt for ICSI we wouldnt have our beautiful daughter with us now!

We have so far not had to worry about her development at all. She appears (To us anyway!) to be quite bright and has quite a vocabulary now. She crawled at approx 7/8 months and took her first steps at 10 months (After cruising the furniture for a while beforehand). She is also rarely ill.

Good luck!

I highly recommend that you proceed with ICSI. I too was very concerned about it, but my Doc has never experienced any different results with ICSI and standard IVF in the sense of problems. We are currently waiting for our results, but I believe that this procedure is God-send for those of us that have male factor. I personally do not think you have anything to worry about and I have done significant research myself and trust my Doc who is one of the best implicitly.

Wishing you God's blessing of a miracle!! :)

I too had IVF w/ ICSI in June of this year. It was my first IVF cycle and we had ICSI due to Dh's poor morphology, poor motility, low count. Here I am .. 19 weeks and 5 days pregnant with one healthy baby boy! Everything looks great so far!

There really are not any studies that confirm that ICSI causes any more birth defects than someone not under going it.. I.E. Just IVF w/out ICSI or natural pregnancy.. See this quote I took from an IVF website..

"There have now been many thousands of babies born after IVF with ICSI with follow-up after birth. Thus far, there has not been demonstrated to be any clear increased risk for birth defects. Most studies thus far have shown that the risk of birth defects after ICSI is the same as for babies conceived through IVF without ICSI, and for those conceived “naturally”.

Good Luck ! :)

I'm a physician and did my homework and subsequent ICSI for male factor infertility without reservation. I now have a very advanced/healthy 2 yr old and I'm 30 weeks pregnant with another boy that by US appears completely normal. Without ICSI I would not have children.....I can't imagine life without my son! Birth defects with ICSI are in question and mild at best. But the bottom line is that I would have loved my son the same even if he did not come out perfect. Good luck!

I have had IVF with ICSI 3x now
1str time - May 07 - BPN - normal protocal but opted for IVF given response to follistem (not safe to proceed any other way)
2nd - july 07 - Chemical pregnancy - had started accupuncture and revised diet, vitamins...
3rd - Sept 07 - BPN - despite even further changing diet, ie: no dairy, red meats or caffeine (except occassionally) and continued accupuncture

So, I am pretty discouraged, and allowing myself to eat drink anything (except alcohol) including diet coke again - thoughts, advise... I'm open to hearing/learning...

Did not eat alkaline foods ie: pineapple around transfer - knew nothing of this and find myself craving carbs at this time...

thanks!

Hello glad to be of any help. We used ICSI really as a final resort it was our one and only chance or so I had agreed with my husband although in truth I would have done it all again!! Strangley enough when I mentioned this to Paul about if we had time left to fit in another child I would do it again now he looked horrified!!!
In brief it was our last chance because we had to pay for it, I was approaching 40, and my husbands sperm count was going down alarmingly. At the hospital in Liverpool they explained how it worked one sperm, one egg and really as putting it back it by using a scan it seemed the obvious choice.
I had partly forgotten my concerns but your message made me recall all the worries ie it was so forced that maybe a duff egg or sperm that would with nature never have worked etc etc.
I can honestly say there have been no concerns re Kirstens health/growth touching wood obviously. (She had whooping cough at eight weeks which was scary but due to people not taking up the vacinations and travelling to France etc where it still occurs. Not due to anything about her)
In herself she is just as smart as Jess was at the same age my Mum had concerns she wasn't speaking quite as well however out the blue she is stringing together sentences and is known in all the parent and toddler groups we attend as a bundle of energy!
I had an amneio to make sure there were no problems which Paul thought was nuts when you think of what we had been through and also when he reliased the risk however I could not leave the legacy of a ill child for Jess to have to look after in the distant future. The results were fine obviously and the peace of mind .
She is two years 5 months old and tall for her age we are vegetarians and she eats more and is prepared to try different things than Jessie was.
So in total I would advise you if you have this opportunity grasp it with both hands I wish you luck and hope you have the happy outcome I'm sure you derserve. Let me know it goes
Cate x ps I don't know where you live or which health authority but the Womens hospital in Liverpool where brilliant and I think from memory it cost just under £4000. Worth every penny

Justine -
Thanks for your tips. Interesting about the milk - my accupuncturist told me to cut dairy - so I had cut dairy, red meat and caffeine forever. I've been eating drinking everything (except alcohol) since getting results.

Another woman mentioned that she too was drinking milk - odd, given the advise on dairy - your thoughts?
